Chapter 2 - A Vow in the Rain

Outside the courthouse steps, the rain tapered into a freezing mist. An officiant in a black trench coat waited near the stone fountain, flanked by two hired witnesses. Gregory and Ashley had arranged a quick civil ceremony immediately following the court session—a public declaration that their passion had triumphed over protocol.
Madeline stood near her mother’s car, watching the scene unfold. Ashley threw her head back in dramatic laughter as Gregory slipped a diamond band onto her finger. To the casual observer, it was the picture of modern romance: a powerful executive starting fresh with the woman of his dreams.

What Gregory had forgotten in his arrogance was the foundational history of Vance-Monroe Logistics. He believed he had built the enterprise from the ground up. He had forgotten who wrote the initial algorithms, who secured the primary venture funding, and whose grandfather had established the irrevocable blind trust that backed every major loan the company held.
Ashley caught Madeline watching and blew a kiss across the plaza, her diamond ring sparkling against the damp gray sky. Madeline simply raised her coffee cup in a quiet, silent toast.
