Chapter 15 - Fire in the Woods

The snow fell heavily over the secluded pine forest surrounding the old Montgomery estate in Lake Forest.

The carriage house—a historic two-story stone and timber building—sat quiet in the dark, its windows frosted with ice. Inside the stone vault rested fifty years of family history, personal letters, and sentimental treasures that Claire held dearer than any monetary fortune.

At 11:45 PM, a dark SUV pulled onto the gravel driveway with its headlights off.

Donald Vance and two men carrying industrial gas cans stepped out into the freezing storm, creeping toward the wooden side door of the carriage house.

"Splash the perimeter first," Donald instructed softly into his radio. "Then set the timer on the main floor."

The men splashed gas across the wooden beams. Donald pulled a heavy crowbar from his belt, jamming it into the lock of the side door.

CREAK.

The lock snapped open.

Donald stepped into the dark interior, clicking on his flashlight. He approached the central display case holding the vintage leather journals of Claire’s father. He raised a lighter, flicking the flame to life.

"Looking for light, Donald?" a voice echoed from the shadows of the balcony above.

Donald spun around, pointing his flashlight upward!

Ethan stood on the timber balcony, flanked by Dr. Marcus Vance and four tactical security officers wearing heavy winter gear.

" Ethan!" Donald gasped, dropping the lighter onto the concrete floor. "How did you—"

"You're on private property, Donald," Ethan said calmly, walking down the wooden staircase with slow, measured steps. "With intent to commit aggravated arson, commercial burglary, and destruction of historical documents."

The two men outside tried to run back toward their SUV, but two black security trucks pulled up behind them, blocking the driveway completely with blinding high-beams.

Donald reached for his jacket pocket, but Marcus Vance stepped forward with lightning speed, grabbing Donald’s wrist and twisting it downward until the crowbar clattered onto the floor.

"Don't make it worse than it already is," Marcus said coldly, shoving Donald against the stone wall as handcuffs clicked shut around his wrists.

Ethan walked over to the wooden display case, gently touching the leather cover of his father-in-law's journal. It was untouched, safe, and cold.

Ethan pulled out his phone, placing it on speaker.

"Richard," Ethan spoke into the line.

Across town in his Lincoln Park penthouse, Richard Montgomery froze, holding his glass of whiskey. "Ethan...? Donald, is that you?!"

"Donald is currently in handcuffs, Richard," Ethan said smoothly, his voice carrying through the quiet stone room. "And federal arson charges carry a mandatory fifteen-year sentence without parole."

"No... no!" Richard screamed into the phone. "This is my family property! You can't do this to me!"

"It was your property, Richard," Ethan corrected him softly. "Until twenty minutes ago when Claire purchased the mortgage from the probate court. You have ten minutes before the state troopers arrive at your apartment door."

Ethan ended the call, looking at Marcus and the officers.

"Lock the doors," Ethan instructed gently. "Preserve everything. This garden belongs to Claire now."
