Chapter 18 - The Table of Life

That evening, the celebration returned to the Wilmette home.

A long cedar dining table had been set up on the outdoor stone patio overlooking the lake. The table was decorated with fresh white roses, twinkling fairy lights, and clear glass candles flickering in the gentle evening breeze.

Dr. Marcus Vance, Sarah Hayes, Nurse Sarah, and several close neighbors sat around the table, sharing plates of grilled salmon, fresh salads, and artisan bread.

There were no formal corporate speeches tonight. No business reports. No legal strategies.

Ethan sat at the head of the table, wearing a white linen shirt with his sleeves rolled up, pouring glasses of crisp white wine for his guests.

Claire sat beside him, feeding little Lily small pieces of sweet strawberries, her laughter ringing out across the patio as Lily made funny faces with every bite.

Marcus raised his glass, tapping it gently with a fork.

"I’d like to make a toast," Marcus said, standing up, looking at Ethan and Claire with deep, unconditional warmth.

The table grew quiet, everyone turning their attention toward him.

"Two years ago," Marcus began, his voice filled with emotion, "I watched Ethan walk into a hospital room carrying the weight of the entire world on his shoulders. I watched Claire fighting for her daughter’s health while everyone around her tried to pull her down."

He looked at Ethan and Claire, his glass held high in the warm sunset light.

"I’ve treated thousands of patients in my career," Marcus continued softly. "But I have never seen a medicine more powerful than the love these two people have for each other and for their daughter. To Ethan, Claire, and little Lily—may your table always be full, your home always be warm, and your peace never end."

Everyone at the table stood up, raising their glasses, their voices joining together in a resonant, loving toast:

"To the Morales family!"

Ethan picked up his glass, looking at the glowing, happy faces around his table.

He looked at Claire, whose eyes were shining with tearful, radiant joy.

He leaned over, pressing a gentle kiss to her temple, feeling the soft, warm skin of his wife against his cheek.

"To family," Ethan whispered softly.
