Chapter 16 - The Trial of Cold Ashes

The criminal trial of Richard Montgomery unfolded with swift, unyielding finality at the Richard J. Daley Center in downtown Chicago.

Over four days of intense testimony, the court was presented with undeniable evidence of forged codicils, attempted financial sabotage, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit arson.

The media packed the courtroom gallery every single morning. The story of a brave young mother who stood up against a predatory family dynasty to protect her father's legacy had captivated the entire Midwest.

On the final day of the trial, Claire took the witness stand.

She wore a simple, elegant navy dress, her dark hair pulled back neatly, her posture radiant and unshakeable. She looked directly at Richard Montgomery, who sat at the defense table in orange prison scrubs, his spirit completely broken.

"Mrs. Morales," the prosecutor asked. "What did Richard Montgomery say to you when your father was in the hospital three years ago?"

Claire took a deep, steady breath. She didn't look away from Richard.

"He told me that without my father's money, I was nothing," Claire testified softly, her voice echoing off the high marble walls of the courtroom. "He told me that some people are born to own things, and some people are born to serve. He tried to leave me with nothing in the cold."

She paused, looking over at Ethan, who sat in the front row holding little Lily on his lap. Lily was reaching her small hand toward her mother, smiling happily.

"But he was wrong," Claire continued, her voice rising with absolute clarity and strength. "Wealth isn't what's in your bank account or what name is on a building. Wealth is the love you build, the truth you stand for, and the family that protects you when the storm comes."

The jury deliberated for less than thirty minutes.

"On the count of federal wire fraud: Guilty," the jury foreman announced. "On the count of document forgery: Guilty. On the count of conspiracy to commit arson: Guilty."

The judge, a stern man with thirty years on the bench, looked down at Richard Montgomery over his reading glasses.

"Richard Montgomery," the judge declared, slamming his heavy wooden gavel onto the bench. "You displayed a level of predatory malice toward your own family that this court rarely witnesses. You are sentenced to twenty-two years in the Illinois State Penitentiary."

BANG.

As officers led Richard away in chains, he turned to look at Claire and Ethan one last time, his eyes filled with pathetic regret.

Claire didn't look back. She stepped off the witness stand, walked straight to her husband and daughter, and wrapped her arms around them in the warm afternoon light filtering through the high courtroom windows.
