Chapter 5 - The Trap Snaps Shut

Ryan approached the door with dread, his heart hammering against his ribs. When he pulled it open, he was met not by the police, but by a process server who thrust a stack of legal documents into his chest.

"Ryan Sullivan? You’ve been served," the man said before turning and walking down the hallway.

Ryan looked at the documents. It was a summons for a federal court appearance, scheduled for the following Monday. But it wasn't just a civil suit for the house. The charges listed were staggering: bank fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy, identity theft, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

But the worst part was the plaintiff listed alongside Chloe: The United States Federal Attorney's Office.

Daniel Vance hadn't just filed a private lawsuit. He had used his vast political and financial connections to hand over all the gathered evidence to federal prosecutors. Because the three million dollars had been moved across international borders to the Cayman Islands, it was now a federal crime.

"No, no, no..." Ryan muttered, flipping through the pages. "This can't be happening. They're facing twenty years in prison."

"What?" Patricia shrieked, snatching the papers from his hands. As she read the charges, her breath became shallow, and she sank to the floor, clutching her chest. "Twenty years? I’m sixty-two years old! I’ll die in prison!"

"We need to run," Emma panicked, grabbing a duffel bag from her closet. "Ryan, let’s take the offshore money and leave the country! We can go to a non-extradition country!"

"We can't," Ryan said, his voice hollow. "The offshore account... I tried to access it an hour ago. The bank in the Caymans froze it under a federal court order. We have nothing, Emma. We are completely broke."

While the Sullivans descended into utter chaos, a quiet victory was being celebrated at Daniel’s estate.

Chloe was sitting in the garden, wrapped in a warm cashmere shawl, watching the winter sun set over the mountains. For the first time in years, the heavy cloud of manipulation and self-doubt that had hung over her was gone. She felt light. She felt strong.

Daniel walked out to join her, carrying two glasses of sparkling apple cider. He handed one to her and smiled.

"To justice," Daniel said.

"To justice," Chloe echoed, clinking her glass against his. "Is it really over, Daniel?"

"Almost," Daniel replied, his eyes gleaming with a cold satisfaction. "On Monday, they will have their day in court. They tried to make you look mentally unstable to steal your life. Now, the entire world will see them for the pathetic, desperate thieves they truly are."

"I don't even hate them anymore," Chloe said softly, looking down at Liam, who was sleeping peacefully in her arms. "I just feel pity. They destroyed their own lives for money they could never keep."

"Pity is for the weak, Chloe," Daniel said gently but firmly. "What you are feeling is peace. And you have earned every single bit of it."
