Chapter 7 - The Verdict

The silence in the courtroom was absolute as Judge Carter prepared to deliver her sentence. She looked at the defendants, her expression hard and unforgiving.

"Ryan Sullivan, Patricia Sullivan, and Emma Sullivan," the judge began. "The court has accepted your guilty pleas. The evidence of your conspiracy is overwhelming, and your actions are among the most detestable I have ever seen in this courtroom. You targeted a vulnerable woman at her most physically and emotionally fragile moment, purely out of greed."

She turned her attention to Patricia first. "Patricia Sullivan, for your role in planning and executing this fraud, I sentence you to twelve years in a federal penitentiary, with no possibility of parole. You will also forfeit all personal assets to cover the court costs and restitution."

Patricia let out a loud sob and collapsed against her daughter, who was also crying hysterically.

"Emma Sullivan," the judge continued. "While your involvement was secondary, you actively participated in the conspiracy and attempted to help your brother flee the country. I sentence you to three years in a low-security federal facility."

Finally, Judge Carter looked at Ryan. The disgust in her eyes was palpable.

"Ryan Sullivan, you violated the sacred trust of marriage. You abandoned your wife and your newborn child in a freezing hospital parking lot to steal a house you did nothing to earn. Your behavior is pathetic, cowardly, and monstrous. I sentence you to twenty years in federal prison."

The courtroom erupted into whispers and gasps. Ryan stared blankly ahead, his jaw slack, his entire body trembling. Twenty years. His youth, his career, his life—gone.

"In addition," Judge Carter added, "all offshore funds are to be immediately returned to the plaintiff, and the Cherry Hills estate is restored to the sole ownership of Chloe Vance-Sullivan. Court is adjourned."

As the bailiffs stepped forward to handcuff the Sullivans, Ryan looked back at Chloe one last time. He wanted to see pain in her eyes. He wanted to see anger.

But all he saw was indifference.

Chloe turned her back on him, walking out of the courtroom beside her uncle, her head held high. She was finally, completely free.
