Chapter 3 - THE UNRAVELING OF THE GOLDEN CHILD

"Harrison, wait!" Tyler screamed, running after the black SUV as it kicked up gravel, speeding away from the Grandview Estate grounds. "Chloe! Please! I can explain!"

Tyler tripped over his own expensive leather shoes and fell face-first into the dirty gravel driveway. His pristine $3,000 tuxedo was torn at the knees, coated in dust and grey mud.

The dozens of wealthy guests invited by the Montgomery family began dispersing rapidly, whispering among themselves, getting back into their luxury cars and pulling away. Within ten minutes, the grand driveway was practically deserted, leaving only my parents, Tyler, Sarah, and me.

My father, Arthur, slowly walked over to where Tyler was picking himself up from the ground. Arthur’s face was dark, his hands shaking with an uncontrollable rage that had been building for years.

"Dad..." Tyler whimpered, wiping blood from a scrape on his chin. "You have to help me. Talk to Julian. Make him call Mr. Montgomery! I can’t lose Chloe! Her father was going to give me a position at his firm!"

SLAP!

The sound of my father’s hand striking Tyler’s face echoed across the empty courtyard.

Tyler staggered back, holding his red cheek, his eyes wide in utter shock. In thirty years, Arthur Vance had never raised a hand against his "golden child." Tyler was the favorite, the boy who could do no wrong, the son who was praised for every minor achievement while my hard work was treated as an expectation.

"You idiot!" Arthur roared, his voice cracking with emotion. "You absolute, arrogant idiot! Do you have any idea what you’ve done?!"

"Dad, why are you hitting me?!" Tyler cried out like a spoiled child. "Julian is the one who cancelled the venue!"

"Julian cancelled it because you treated his daughter like dirt!" Arthur screamed, stepping into Tyler’s space. "I told you three days ago to pay the $10,000 security deposit to Julian's corporate account! Where did the money go, Tyler?! I gave you $15,000 cash from my savings account to cover it!"

My ears perked up. I looked at Sarah, then stepped closer to my father.

"Wait," I interjected, my eyes narrowing. "You gave him $15,000, Dad?"

Arthur turned to me, his chest heaving, tears of frustration in his eyes. "Yes, Julian! Three weeks ago! He told me your corporate account required a cash verification deposit! I gave him fifteen thousand dollars from my retirement fund!"

I let out a cold, sarcastic laugh. I looked down at Tyler, whose eyes were darting frantically toward his sports car parked near the entrance.

"He didn't put a single dollar into the venue account, Dad," I revealed softly. "Which means your golden son took your retirement money and used it for something else."

Mom ran over, clutching her designer handbag. "Tyler... honey, tell your father that’s not true! Where is the fifteen thousand dollars?!"

Tyler swallowed hard, backing away toward his car. "I... I needed to make an impression on Chloe’s brothers! I bought... I leased a sports car and bought some watches..."

"You spent my retirement money on watches?!" Arthur shouted, taking another aggressive step toward Tyler.

"I was going to pay it back after the wedding!" Tyler yelled defensively. "Harrison was going to give me a $200,000 signing bonus when I joined his company! I was setting myself up for success! Why is everyone blaming me?!"

I walked over to Tyler, stopping just inches from his face. The arrogance that he had displayed the night before while standing over my daughter's ruined birthday cake was completely shattered.

"Because you built your entire life on lies, Tyler," I whispered, my voice dripping with quiet fury. "You used Dad's money, you used my executive perks, you lied to your bride, and you thought you were invincible. But last night, when you made my six-year-old child cry, you destroyed the only shield you ever had."

"Julian, please..." Tyler whimpered, his voice trembling. "We’re brothers..."

"We were brothers," I corrected him flatly. "As of today, you are nothing to me."

I turned my back on him, took Sarah’s hand, and walked toward our car.

"Julian! Wait!" Mom cried out, running behind us. "What about your father's retirement money?! How are we supposed to pay our mortgage next month?!"

May you like

I stopped at the driver's side door of my car, looking back at my mother with total detachment.

"You should ask Tyler," I said smoothly. "Maybe he can sell one of his watches."
