Chapter 5 - THE SURRENDER OF PRIVILEGE

By Wednesday afternoon, the reality of what Tyler had done began crashing down on my parents' home with the force of a wrecking ball.

I was sitting in my living room with Sarah and Sophie, helping my daughter paint a watercolor picture of a rainbow, when the front doorbell rang.

I opened the door to find my father standing on the porch.

Arthur Vance looked like he had aged ten years in four days. His posture was slouched, his hair uncombed, and his expensive jacket hung loosely over his shoulders. Standing beside him was my mother, her eyes swollen and red from endless crying.

"Julian..." Arthur whispered, his voice completely devoid of its former stern authority. "Can we come in?"

I looked at Sarah, who stepped over gently and guided Sophie into the playroom, closing the wooden door behind her.

"You can come in, Dad," I said, stepping aside. "Mom."

They walked into the living room, sitting stiffly on the edge of the sofa. They looked around at my clean, comfortable home—a home I had bought entirely with my own hard-earned money, without ever asking them for a single dime.

"The federal investigators came to Tyler’s apartment this morning," Arthur said, his hands shaking as he rested them on his knees. "They served him with an indictment for corporate wire fraud and forgery."

"I know," I said calmly, taking a seat across from them. "Marcus Sterling informed me."

"Julian! You have to stop this!" Mom burst out, pulling a wet handkerchief from her pocket. "They’re going to put your brother in prison! He’s only twenty-eight years old! His whole life will be ruined!"

"He ruined his own life, Mom," I replied smoothly. "He forged my signature on a $450,000 corporate contract and stole $85,000 from my employer. That isn't a mistake. That is a serious felony."

"He did it because he felt inferior to you!" Mom cried out, trying to shift the blame once again. "You were always the successful one! You had the big job, the nice house, the perfect family! Tyler just wanted to impress Chloe’s family! He felt pressured!"

"Inferior?!" I let out a sharp, cold laugh. "Mom, for thirty years, you and Dad treated me like I was invisible! Tyler got the luxury cars, Tyler got his college tuition paid in full while I worked night shifts to pay for mine! You gave him Dad's retirement savings! You praised him every time he breathed, while you treated my achievements like an inconvenience!"

Arthur buried his face in his hands, letting out a long, shuddering groan.

"She’s right, Eleanor," Arthur choked out, looking up at my mother with tears streaming down his face. "Julian is right. We enabled him. We created a monster."

"Arthur!" Mom gasped.

"No, Eleanor! Listen to us!" Arthur yelled, his voice cracking with emotion. "We gave him everything he ever asked for! And what did he do?! He stole my retirement fund! He lied to us! He insulted Julian’s sweet little girl and threw her birthday cake in the garbage! He doesn't care about us! He only cares about himself!"

Arthur turned to me, his eyes filled with a desperate, heartbreaking humility.

"Julian... I’m not here to ask you to drop the charges," Arthur whispered. "I know Tyler needs to face consequences. I’m here... I’m here to ask for your forgiveness."

I looked at my father. For the first time in my thirty-four years of life, I saw Arthur Vance not as a demanding, biased patriarch, but as a broken father who had finally realized the bitter truth of his own choices.

"Dad," I said softly. "I forgive you for being blind. But Tyler has to pay back every single cent he stole, and he has to answer to the law."

May you like

"He doesn't have the money, Julian," Arthur said hollowly. "The federal marshals frozen his accounts. And... and the bank is foreclosing on our house next month because I co-signed Tyler’s sports car lease and his business loans."

I sat back, absorbing the weight of his words. My parents were about to lose their home of thirty years because of the golden child they had protected at all costs.
