Chapter 2 - The Sound of Betrayal

Returning to her penthouse apartment in downtown Chicago felt like entering enemy territory. Mariana locked herself in the master bathroom, turning on the shower to create a wall of white noise. She sat on the cold marble floor, pulling the digital voice recorder from her bag. Her hands trembled as she pressed the play button.

The audio was clear, despite a faint layer of static. The voices were instantly recognizable: her father’s gravelly tone, Alejandro’s smooth, persuasive cadence, and her brother Daniel’s impatient snapping. The recording was dated exactly one week before her divorce was finalized.

"He won't sign it, Arthur," Alejandro’s voice said, sounding younger but no less calculating. "Robert is stubborn. He genuinely thinks he can protect Mariana by taking this to the federal prosecutors."

"He doesn't have a choice," Arthur Vance growled. "If the EPA investigates the South Side development site, they’ll find the toxic runoff levels we buried. The entire portfolio becomes worthless. The family goes under, and Mariana’s inheritance vanishes. More importantly, I go to prison."

"Then we make him an offer he can't refuse," Daniel’s voice chimed in, cold and ruthless. "We don't threaten him. We threaten her. Robert worships the ground she walks on. If he thinks his silence keeps the federal hammer from falling on Mariana as a listed co-owner of the holding company, he’ll take the fall."

"I've already set the stage," Alejandro responded, a sickening note of pride in his voice. "I’ve funneled two million from the school’s endowment fund into a dummy account under Robert’s name. I’ve manufactured the affair paperwork with a hired escort. If he doesn't sign the non-disclosure and accept the absolute destruction of his character, I will personally ensure Mariana is indicted as his co-conspirator in a corporate fraud scheme. He will watch the woman he loves rot in a federal cell."

There was a long pause on the tape, followed by the sound of a door opening. Then, a voice that made Mariana’s heart break all over again. Robert. Rough, exhausted, but defiant.

"I won't let you drag Mariana into your filth," Robert said on the recording.

"Then sign, Professor," Alejandro replied smoothly. "Sign the confession. Accept the banishment. Walk away from her, let her hate you, and she remains the innocent victim who inherits everything. If you try to be a hero, she goes down with us. Choose."

The sound of a pen scratching against paper signaled the end of the recording.

Mariana dropped the recorder onto the floor, tears streaming down her face. The realization hit her like a physical blow. Robert hadn't betrayed her. He hadn't stolen, he hadn't cheated, and he hadn't abandoned her. He had sacrificed his career, his reputation, his dignity, and his very sanity to keep her out of a federal prison for a corporate crime she knew nothing about.

And she had spent seven years hating him, sleeping in the bed of the monster who had engineered his downfall.

"Mariana? Are you in there?"

Alejandro’s voice boomed through the bedroom door. Mariana scrambled to her feet, shoving the recorder and the manila folder under a pile of towels. She splashed cold water on her face, trying to erase the tracks of her tears, and opened the door.

Alejandro stood there, tall, impeccably dressed in a bespoke suit, holding a bouquet of white roses. His handsome face was masked in an expression of gentle concern, the very same expression that had comforted her during the darkest days of her divorce.

"You left the estate in a hurry," he said, stepping into the bathroom and wrapping his arms around her waist. His touch made her skin crawl. "Your mother said you looked like you’d seen a ghost. Is everything okay, darling?"

"I’m just tired," Mariana lied, forcing her voice to remain steady, though her heart was hammering so loudly she feared he might hear it. "Just a headache. I needed some space."

Alejandro looked at her closely, his eyes narrowing slightly, a predatory instinct flashing beneath his sophisticated exterior. "You didn't answer my texts. And your SUV was spotted near Logan Square earlier today. That’s a bit out of your way for a downtown lunch, isn't it?"

Mariana felt a chill run down her spine. He was tracking her. The realization that she was completely surrounded by his surveillance network made her realize she couldn't fight him openly—not yet.

"I was looking at an old antique shop," she said smoothly, leaning into him to hide her tension. "Trying to find a piece for the living room. I forgot my phone in the console."

May you like

Alejandro stared at her for a long moment before his face relaxed into a warm smile. He kissed her forehead. "Don't wander off like that without telling me, Mariana. The city can be dangerous. I only want to keep you safe."

Safe. The word echoed in her mind, now twisted into its true definition: captivity. She nodded, offering a frail smile, knowing that from this moment on, every second of her life was a performance until she could find a way to tear his empire down.
