Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the Past

Finding someone who doesn't want to be found in a city of millions is nearly impossible, especially when that person is hiding in the shadows of the homeless shelter system. Mariana spent three days slipping away from her security detail, changing clothes in public restrooms, and visiting the bleakest corners of the South Side.

Finally, at a soup kitchen run by a dilapidated church near Englewood, she found a lead. An elderly volunteer recognized Robert’s picture.

"He goes by 'Professor' around here," the volunteer said, wiping down a table. "He doesn't talk much, but he helps the younger kids with their reading. He stays at the night shelter down the block, but he leaves early before the sun comes up. He doesn't like being in enclosed spaces."

Mariana waited outside the night shelter as the evening sun began to dip below the horizon, casting long, bruised shadows across the concrete. The air grew cold, a sharp contrast to the brutal heat of their first encounter.

At 8:00 PM, she saw him. He was walking with his head down, his shoulders hunched against the wind, still wearing the same worn-out jacket. The black garbage bag was gone, replaced by a battered backpack.

"Robert," she called out gently, stepping from the shadows.

He stopped dead in his tracks. For a second, she thought he would run again. He looked around frantically, his eyes scanning the dark alleyways.

"Mariana, I told you to stay away," he hissed, his voice tight with panic. "You don't understand the danger you’re in. Alejandro... he has people everywhere. If he sees you with me, everything I did, everything I gave up, means nothing."

"I know everything, Robert," she said, her voice breaking as she stepped closer, refusing to let him retreat. "I found the safe. I listened to the tape. I know what they did to you. I know you signed the confession to save me from prison."

Robert froze, his entire body going rigid. The defensive wall he had built over seven long years seemed to crack, revealing a deep, agonizing sorrow. "You... you found the tape?"

"Yes," she wept, reaching out to touch his arm. This time, he didn't pull away. His skin was rough and cold, but beneath it, she felt the familiar rhythm of his pulse. "I am so sorry, Robert. I hated you for seven years. I believed their lies. I let them destroy you while I lived in comfort. Can you ever forgive me?"

Robert looked down at her hand on his arm, a single tear cutting a clean path through the dirt on his cheek. "There’s nothing to forgive, Mariana. I never blamed you. I only wanted you to be safe. When your father and Alejandro showed me the documents... when they showed me your signature on the corporate deeds... I knew they would sacrifice you to save themselves. I couldn't let that happen."

"My signature was forged," Mariana said, her teeth clenching with rage. "I never signed those deeds. Alejandro set it all up before we were even married."

Robert let out a long, ragged breath, a sound of profound exhaustion. "It doesn't change the fact that they have the power to destroy you even now. Alejandro isn't just a lawyer, Mariana. He’s the architect of your family’s criminal operations. If he discovers you know the truth, he will use those forged documents to indict you before you can expose him."

"We have a plan," Mariana said, gripping his arm tighter. "I have a journalist friend, Sarah Jenkins. She’s helping me build a federal case. But we need the original environmental reports. The ones showing the true toxicity levels before my father altered them. Do you know where they are?"

Robert hesitated, looking around the dark street once more. "I didn't destroy them," he whispered. "I couldn't bring myself to do it. I hid them in the one place your family would never look—the old archives of the university library, buried inside the manuscript of my unfinished historical thesis. But getting them out won't be easy. The campus has private security, and Alejandro sits on the university’s board of trustees."

"Then we go together," Mariana said determinedly. "We take back your life, Robert. Starting tonight."
