Chapter 10 - The Star Song’s Promise

Six months later, the spring sun warmed the hills of the Whitmore estate.

The black iron gates were open, letting in the cool, ocean breeze. The garden was no longer just manicured green lawn; it was bursting with vibrant yellow roses, planted by Lucas, Owen, and Claire.

I stood on the back deck, holding a mug of coffee, watching my sons. They were running through the yard, chasing our golden retriever puppy, their laughter echoing across the lawn.

Claire walked out to join me, wearing a sundress, her face healthy and radiant. The locket she wore rested right over her chest, rising and falling with her steady, strong heartbeat.

I reached out, wrapping my arm around her waist, pulling her close.

"What are you thinking about?" she asked, leaning her head against my shoulder.

"I was just thinking about how quiet this place used to be," I said softly. "And how much I love the noise now."

She smiled, looking out at the boys. "They're growing so fast, Julian."

"Thanks to you," I said, turning her to face me. I placed my hand gently over her chest, feeling the rhythmic, sacred beat of the heart that had brought us together. "Thanks to Evelyn, and thanks to you."

"We're a family now, Julian," she whispered. "We made it."

"Yes, we did," I agreed, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss to her lips.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of pink and gold, Lucas and Owen ran up the deck stairs, jumping into our arms.

"Daddy! Aunt Claire! Look at the stars!" Owen pointed to the first twinkling light in the evening sky.

Claire began to hum, her voice sweet and clear, and my sons joined in, their voices blending into a beautiful harmony:

"Twinkle, twinkle, little star... keep us safe wherever we are..."

I closed my eyes, holding my family tight, finally at peace. The star song wasn't a memory of the past anymore. It was the promise of our future.
