Chapter 3 - The Awakening

The sun was beginning to set, casting long, amber shadows across the hospital room when Claire’s eyelids finally fluttered open.

The monitor’s beep accelerated slightly, mirroring her sudden disorientation. She looked around the sterile room, her eyes wide with panic until they landed on Lucas and Owen, who were coloring quietly on the bedside table.

"Lucas... Owen..." her voice was raspy, barely a breath.

The twins dropped their crayons. "Aunt Claire!" Owen cried, reaching out to touch her arm.

"Shh, let her rest, boys," I said, stepping forward from the shadows of the corner where I had been sitting for hours.

Claire’s eyes shifted to me. A look of sheer terror crossed her face. She tried to sit up, pulling against the IV lines. "Mr. Whitmore... I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to collapse. I can work... I promise I can finish my shift..."

"Claire, stop," I said, my voice softer than it had ever been. I stepped to the bedside and gently placed my hand over her trembling shoulder, guiding her back down to the pillows. "Don't try to get up. You're safe. You're in the hospital."

She looked up at me, tears welling in her green eyes. "Please don't fire me. I need the insurance. I have to... I have to take my medicine."

"I know," I said. "I know everything, Claire."

She froze. The monitor beside her spiked, its steady rhythm turning into a rapid, frantic tempo. She looked at me, then at the boys, and finally down at her chest.

"You... you know?" she whispered.

"I know whose heart is keeping you alive," I said, my voice thick with emotion. I reached down, taking her hand. Her palm was warm, her pulse steady and strong beneath my thumb. "And I know why my boys love you so much. They felt her, Claire. They felt Evelyn."

A single tear slipped down Claire's cheek. "I'm so sorry, Julian. I didn't mean to intrude on your life. When I found out Evelyn was my donor... I looked up her obituary. I saw she left behind two twin boys. I couldn't stop thinking about them. I just wanted to make sure they were okay. I applied for the job through the agency. I never planned on telling you. I just wanted to give them a little bit of the warmth their mother would have given them."

"You don't have to apologize," I said, my own tears finally spilling over. "You saved them. While I was busy building walls, you were building a bridge back to their mother. You have nothing to apologize for."
