Chapter 7 - The Unveiling of the Past

The next few weeks were a revelation. With Claire living in the house, the sterile, silent mansion transformed into a home.

The sound of laughter echoed through the high-ceilinged hallways. Claire taught the boys how to make proper chocolate chip cookies, leaving flour smudges on the marble kitchen counters that I didn't care to clean up. She sang the star song with them every night, and slowly, I found myself sitting on the edge of their beds, humming along.

One rainy afternoon, Claire and I went down to the basement archives to find Evelyn’s old photo albums.

"I want the boys to remember her face, not just her heart," Claire said as we blew dust off a heavy, leather-bound album.

As we flipped through the pages, we found a letter tucked into the back cover. It was addressed to The One Who Carries My Heart.

My breath hitched. "Evelyn wrote this?"

"She knew she wasn't going to make it," Claire whispered, her hand trembling as she opened the envelope. "The hospital allows donors to leave letters for the registry to pass on if both parties agree."

We read the elegant script together:

To whoever is reading this: If you are holding this letter, it means my heart is beating inside you. I want you to know that this heart has loved deeply. It has loved a man named Julian, who is stronger than he knows but carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. And it has loved two beautiful boys, Lucas and Owen, who are my entire universe. I do not ask you to carry my burdens. I only ask that you live a beautiful, vibrant life. And if you ever find yourself near my family, please... let them know that I am still with them. Let them know that love never truly dies.

Tears streamed down my face. I looked at Claire. Her eyes were bright with tears, too.

May you like

"She knew," I whispered. "She knew we would find you."

"She wanted us to, Julian," Claire said softly, placing her hand over mine. "She wanted us to heal."
