Chapter 5 - Tearing Down the Walls

Silas laughed, a dry, rattling sound that carried no warmth. "A sister? A bastard child given away by a family that wanted to hide its shame. She has no legal claim to anything, Julian. And if you ruin this family's reputation over a dying charity case, I will personally ensure the courts review your custody status. A man who abandons his corporate duties for a servant isn't fit to raise the heirs to the Whitmore fortune."

That was his fatal mistake. He thought the fortune was the only thing that mattered to me. He thought the threat of taking the company would make me fall in line, just like it always had.

I walked over to the bedside table, picked up my phone, and switched it back on. Within seconds, it lit up with dozens of frantic alerts. I ignored them all, dialing Marcus directly.

"Marcus," I said, my eyes locked onto my father's. "Call the press. All of them. The Tribune, the Financial Times, the local networks. Tell them Julian Whitmore is holding a live press conference from the lobby of St. Mary's Medical Center in one hour."

Silas’s eyes narrowed. "What are you doing?"

"I’m going to tell them the truth, Silas," I said, a weight lifting from my shoulders that I hadn't realized I was carrying for five long years. "I'm going to tell them how Whitmore Enterprises systematically defrauded my late wife’s estate, how the former CEO threatened a dying woman to keep her from her nephews, and how I am stepping down as CEO effective immediately to focus on what actually matters: saving my sister-in-law's life."

The corporate lawyers behind Silas shuffled nervously, exchanging panicked glances. A public scandal of this magnitude would wipe out billions in stock value before the market opened the next morning.

"You're bluffing," Silas hissed, his face turning an ugly shade of red. "You'll destroy everything I built!"

"I don't care about what you built," I said, pointing toward the door. "Get out of my sight. And expect my personal legal team to serve you with a lifetime restraining order from my children by noon."
