Chapter 8 - The Shadow Recedes

The day of the harvest and transplant was the longest twelve hours of my life.
I stood in the surgical waiting room, pacing the floor until the soles of my shoes felt worn down. Marcus stood by the door like a silent sentinel, filtering out the constant barrage of phone calls from the Wall Street analysts who were watching the Whitmore stock stabilize after the board successfully ousted Silas in a landslide vote, appointing a neutral, family-friendly trusteeship to manage the assets until I chose to return.
Silas was gone. The board had stripped him of his titles to save the corporate brand, and he had retreated to his estate in Florida, a lonely old man surrounded by numbers that no longer had anyone to buy them.
"Mr. Whitmore," Dr. Vance finally stepped out of the double doors, stripping off his surgical cap. A weary but triumphant smile lit up his face. "The harvest from Lucas was exceptionally rich. We gathered more than enough healthy stem cells. The transplant into Claire has just been completed. Now, we wait for engraftment."
I rushed into the recovery room, finding my two brave little soldiers lying in twin beds, wrapped in heated blankets, eating popsicles with a slightly groggy but victorious pride.
"Look, Dad!" Owen mumbled around his red cherry popsicle. "I got a bandage like a superhero!"

"You are superheroes," I choked out, kneeling between their beds, pulling both of them into my arms, the tears finally flowing freely down my face. "The bravest ones I know."
Two weeks later, the lab results confirmed the miracle. The twins’ cells had successfully taken root in Claire's marrow. Her blood counts were rising daily. The ghostly pallor of her skin was replaced by a healthy, vibrant warmth, and for the first time in five years, she was completely free from the shadow of the disease that had tried to steal her away.
