Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the Light

The busy Charlotte street seemed to fade into a muted, black-and-white blur. The upbeat strumming of the street musician’s guitar turned into a distant, underwater hum. My boots felt like they were cemented to the concrete sidewalk.
“They lied... to protect you.”
Five words. Five sharp, jagged pieces of a reality I thought I had mastered, cutting straight through the fragile peace I had spent three agonizing years building.
"Tessa?" The name tore from my throat, raw and breathless. It felt sacrilegious to utter it aloud here, in the open air, directed at a woman sitting on a discarded piece of cardboard.
Miles didn't hesitate. He broke from my grip, throwing his small body forward, burying his face into the faded gray fabric of her oversized coat. "Mommy! I knew it was you! I knew you didn't leave me!" he sobbed, his small shoulders shaking violently.
The woman stiffened, her cracked lips parting in a silent gasp. For a second, a flicker of terror crossed her face—she glanced frantically around the crowded food hall plaza, as if expecting men in suits to emerge from the shadows. But then, looking down at the little boy clinging to her waist, her maternal instinct shattered whatever restraint she had left. She wrapped her thin, trembling arms around him, burying her tangled, unwashed hair into his neck.
"My baby... my sweet Miles," she wept, her voice cracked and breathless. "You've grown so much. Look at you..."
I dropped to my knees beside them, my hands hovering in the air, terrified that if I touched her, she would evaporate into thin air like the cruel dreams that haunted my midnights. "Tessa, look at me. Please. What is happening? We buried you. I have the death certificate. There was a car crash... the police said the fire..."
Tessa pulled her eyes away from Miles, meeting my gaze. The profound sadness and fear in those familiar brown eyes pierced me. "It was staged, Ethan. All of it. The crash, the closed casket, the dental records. It was a setup."
"By who?!" I demanded, my voice rising, drawing curious glances from passing shoppers.
She flinched, pulling Miles closer. "Not here. They monitor the grid. They track my name. If anyone sees us together—if they know I'm alive, they will finish what they started. And this time, they won't just come for me. They will kill you and Miles."

Before I could process the sheer weight of her words, a black SUV with tinted windows slowed down at the curb just twenty yards away. Tessa’s eyes widened in sheer panic.
"Get up. Now," she whispered urgently, shoving herself off the wall with a strength born of pure adrenaline. "We have to go. They’ve found me."
