Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Deceased

I grabbed Miles in one arm and Tessa's frail hand with the other. Her skin was ice-cold, rough, and trembling. We dove into the thick of the weekend crowd, weaving through the outdoor dining tables of the food hall. I didn't look back until we reached the labyrinthine corridors of an old, multi-story parking garage two blocks away.
We huddled in the back of my old Volvo. Miles was still crying, clutching his mother's hand as if she would vanish if he let go. Tessa sat in the passenger seat, staring at the dashboard, her breathing ragged.
"Tessa, talk to me. No more riddles," I pleaded, locking the car doors. "Who is 'they'?"
She took a deep, shuddering breath, turning to look at me. "Do you remember the pharmaceutical merger my firm was handling right before my... accident?"
"The Vanguard Group acquisition of BioGen Therapeutics," I recalled, the memories flooding back. Tessa had been a brilliant corporate attorney, working eighty-hour weeks leading up to her disappearance. "You said it was standard corporate restructuring."
"It wasn't," she whispered. "I stumbled upon a hidden ledger buried deep in BioGen's encrypted servers. They weren't just manufacturing life-saving medication. They were running illegal, off-the-books clinical trials on homeless populations and undocumented immigrants in secret facilities across North Carolina. The drug they were testing caused catastrophic organ failure in forty percent of the subjects. They covered up the deaths, burning the bodies in a private crematorium."
I felt a chill run down my spine. "And you tried to blow the whistle?"
May you like
"I compiled a flash drive of evidence," Tessa said, tears spilling down her hollow cheeks. "The night of my accident, I was on my way to meet a federal prosecutor. A black SUV rammed my car off the highway near the Catawba River. I woke up in a windowless room, tied to a chair. A man named Arthur Vance—Vanguard’s chief of security—stood over me."
She shuddered, the trauma evident in her tight jaw. "He showed me a live video feed of our house. You were putting Miles to bed. Vance told me I had two choices: I could die right then, and his men would execute you and Miles within the hour to ensure no loose ends... or I could disappear forever. They would stage the accident with a medical cadaver they procured, and I would live out the rest of my days as a ghost. If I ever contacted you, if I ever stepped foot near our old life, you both would pay the price."
