Chapter 10 - Dawn of a New Life

The downfall of Vanguard Group and Senator Sterling was swift and absolute. The live-streamed confession left no room for political maneuvering or corporate cover-ups. Within forty-eight hours, Sterling and Arthur Vance were in federal custody, facing charges ranging from human trafficking and murder to high treason. The corrupt empire that had held our family hostage for three years was dismantled piece by piece.
Six months later, the nightmare had finally evolved into a distant memory.
It was a warm, golden Saturday afternoon, but we weren't in downtown Charlotte. We were sitting on the sun-drenched deck of a beautiful new house overlooking the calm waters of the outer banks of North Carolina, far away from the shadows of our past.
Marcus, fully recovered from his injuries, was by the grill, laughing as he flipped burgers.
Miles was running across the green lawn, chasing a golden retriever puppy we had adopted the month before. His laughter was no longer strained or hollow—it was the pure, unburdened sound of a happy eight-year-old child.
I sat on the porch swing, a cup of coffee in my hand, looking at the woman sitting beside me.
Tessa’s cheeks were no longer hollow. Her skin had regained its healthy, vibrant glow, and her hair fell in soft, beautiful waves past her shoulders. She wore a bright sundress, her eyes reflecting the sparkling sunlight dancing off the ocean waves.
She reached over, her warm, soft hand sliding into mine. Her fingers didn't tremble anymore. They held onto mine with a peaceful, unshakable strength.
"What are you thinking about?" she asked softly, leaning her head onto my shoulder.
I turned and kissed the top of her head, inhaling the sweet scent of her shampoo—a mundane luxury we would never take for granted again.
"I was just thinking," I smiled, squeezing her hand tightly. "That for three years, I thought the world was a darker place because you weren't in it. But I was wrong. You fought through hell to get back to us. We’re finally home, Tess."

She looked out at Miles, who was now running toward the porch, his face lit up with a brilliant, joyful smile.
"Yes, we are," Tessa whispered, a tear of pure happiness slipping down her cheek. "The ghosts are gone, Ethan. We're finally alive."
