Chapter 7 - The Masterstroke

The board meeting on the forty-second floor lasted forty-five minutes.

When Ethan presented the revised acquisition model—with my name listed as Lead Special Risk Architect on the title slide—the room erupted into unanimous approval. Marcus Thorne personally motioned to ratify the acquisition, and the 400-million-dollar merger was officially closed before the 4:00 PM market bell.

By 6:00 PM, a victory reception was underway in the grand gallery.

Champagne flowed, white roses decorated the marble pillars, and the city's top financial journalists gathered to record the historic deal that had saved Whitmore Capital from Julian Sterling’s insider sabotage.

I stood near the glass window overlooking the lake, holding a glass of sparkling water, wearing a simple, elegant dark green dress Ethan had sent to my office earlier that afternoon.

"Ms. Bennett!"

I turned.

A sharp-looking woman holding a microphone and followed by a camera crew was stepping toward me. It was Sarah Jenkins, the chief financial correspondent for CNBC.

"Ms. Bennett," Sarah said, microphone extended. "Sources inside the board room report that your risk analysis saved the North-Midwest merger from a fatal regulatory trap. How does an analyst from a small logistics background manage to outmaneuver Julian Sterling in seventy-two hours?"

I looked across the crowded room.

Ethan was standing twenty feet away, surrounded by board members and corporate directors. But the moment he heard the reporter speak my name, he turned away from the crowd and walked straight toward me.

He stopped beside me, placing his hand gently, possessively against the small of my back.

"Clara didn't outmaneuver Julian with corporate tricks, Ms. Jenkins," Ethan said clearly into the microphone, his voice echoing across the gallery. "She did it with absolute integrity, unmatched brilliant intellect, and a refusal to sacrifice human safety for short-term profit."

He looked down at me, his eyes shining with open, unfiltered pride.

"She is the future of Whitmore Capital," Ethan added. "And the most extraordinary woman I have ever known."

The camera flashes exploded in a blinding array of light, capturing the look of pure, breathtaking happiness on my face as Ethan held me close against his side.
