Chapter 8 - The Shadow's Revenge

The celebration ended late, but the peace was short-lived.
On Saturday afternoon, three days after the merger closed, I was at my mother’s new apartment near the hospital, helping her set up her new living room furniture. Her health had stabilized dramatically, her smile wide and vibrant as she watched me work.
My phone rang.
It was Mark, Ethan’s assistant. His voice was frantic, breathless, and sharp with panic.
"Clara! Where are you?!" Mark yelled over the receiver.
"I'm at my mom's place. What's wrong?"
"Julian Sterling was released on bail two hours ago," Mark reported, the sound of wind and traffic roaring behind his voice. "He bypassed his ankle monitor. Our security feeds just showed his car heading toward Lily’s school event at the Lincoln Park Conservatory!"
My blood ran cold. "Where is Ethan?"
"He’s in a meeting with the SEC downtown! His phone is locked in a secure briefing room! I’m driving there now, but traffic on the Expressway is deadlocked!"
"I’m five blocks from Lincoln Park," I said, my voice turning into icy steel. "I'm going now."
I didn't wait for a taxi. I threw on my coat, ran down the five flights of stairs, and sprinted down the sidewalk into the freezing afternoon air.
Ten minutes later, I burst through the glass doors of the Lincoln Park Conservatory.
The warm, humid air of the indoor tropical palm house was thick with the scent of orchids, damp soil, and fern leaves. Dozens of parents and children were gathered near the main entrance for the afternoon winter flower show.
I moved quickly through the winding stone paths, my eyes scanning every corridor.
Near the rear fern gallery—a quiet, secluded glass dome away from the main crowd—I saw them.
Lily was standing near a stone fountain, holding a small pot of yellow marigolds.
Standing six feet away, wearing a dark coat with his collar pulled high, was Julian Sterling.
His face was gaunt, his eyes sunken and bloodshot, holding a heavy manila envelope in his shaking hand.
"Come here, Lily," Julian was whispering, his voice trembling with unhinged, desperate rage. "Come with Uncle Julian. We're going to go take a ride to see your daddy."
Lily backed away, her small face pale with terror. "No! Daddy said not to talk to you!"
Julian reached out, his hand lunging forward to grab her coat arm.
"JULIAN!" I screamed.
Julian spun around, his eyes widening in shocking, venomous rage as I sprinted down the stone path, stepping directly between him and Lily.
I pulled Lily behind my back, holding her against my legs.
"Get away from her, Julian," I growled, my voice steady, my heart hammering like a war drum.
"You..." Julian spat, his face contorting into a mask of pure hatred. "You ruined my life! You destroyed my career! My money, my reputation, my firm—everything is gone because of a trashy little temp who didn't know her place!"

He reached into his coat pocket, his hand wrapping around a sleek, dark metallic object.
"If I can't have my life back," Julian rasped, pointing the weapon straight at my chest, "then Ethan Whitmore is going to know what it feels like to lose everything too."
