Chapter 9 - The Shield of Love

I didn't step back.
I expanded my posture, completely shielding Lily’s small body behind mine, blocking Julian’s line of sight entirely.
"Shoot me, Julian," I said, my voice dead calm, echoing off the high glass roof of the conservatory. "Shoot me in front of thirty witnesses and twenty security cameras. See how far you get before the federal marshals tear you apart."
Julian’s hand shook violently, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Shut up! SHUT UP!"
"You think you lost because of me?" I asked, taking one slow, deliberate step forward, forcing him to keep his focus entirely on my eyes. "You lost because you were weak, Julian. You were greedy, lazy, and sloppy. You thought money made you invisible. But you're just a small, pathetic thief who got caught."
"I WILL KILL YOU!" Julian screamed.
BANG!
A heavy iron door at the end of the fern gallery was kicked violently off its frame.
Ethan burst through the doorway like a roaring storm, flanked by four armed security officers and three police officers.
"STERLING!" Ethan’s voice echoed like a thunderclap through the glass dome.
Julian panicked. He turned the weapon toward Ethan.
Before he could pull the trigger, the lead police officer fired a non-lethal taser round. Two high-voltage prongs struck Julian directly in the chest.
Julian shrieked, his body seizing violently as he collapsed onto the wet stone path, dropping the weapon into the mud.
The police swarmed him instantly, pinning him to the ground and pulling his arms behind his back in heavy steel handcuffs.
Ethan didn't even look at Julian.
He sprinted down the stone path, throwing himself onto his knees before Lily and me.
He gathered both of us into his massive, broad arms, pulling us against his chest with a desperate, crushing force that shook his entire body.
"Clara... Lily... God, oh God..." Ethan choked out, his voice breaking, tears streaming down his face as he kissed the top of Lily’s head, then buried his face into my neck, his hot tears soaking my collar. "I thought I was too late... I thought I lost you..."
"I'm here, Ethan," I sobbed, holding his face in my hands, kissing his lips, his cheeks, his forehead. "We're safe. I protected her. I protected our girl."
Ethan pulled back, looking at me with an expression of such pure, holy, unadulterated love that the entire world seemed to pause around us.

"You saved my daughter twice, Clara," Ethan whispered, his hands trembling as he held my face. "You saved my life. You saved my soul."
He kissed me—a deep, fierce, soul-binding kiss under the high glass dome of the conservatory, while police sirens wailed outside and the winter sun broke through the clouds above.
