Chapter 10 - The Sunken Garden

To celebrate Lily’s second birthday, I didn't throw a massive, theatrical party with hundreds of relatives and white dresses. Instead, I invited just a few people who truly mattered: Arthur, Sarah, and Martha—the nurse who had wheeled me down to the NICU when my world was falling apart.
We gathered in the backyard of the coastal cottage. The sun was setting, casting a warm, golden-pink glow across the lawn. There were pink balloons, yes, but this time they were tied securely to a beautiful little wooden playground I had built for her.
Arthur brought a massive wrapped box that turned out to be a giant plush bear, which Lily immediately tried to climb like a mountain. We all laughed, the sound bright and true, echoing across the open air.
As the guests were chatting, I walked down toward the edge of the property, where the lawn met the sand dunes. I looked back at the house—the warm light spilling out from the windows, the people inside who genuinely loved and protected us.
I thought about the woman who had hit the cold pool water two years ago, terrified, bleeding, and alone. I wished I could go back in time, stand at the edge of that water, and whisper to her through the surface: Hold on. Don't be afraid. You are going to build a life so beautiful, the dark won't even be able to find you.
"Mama!"
I turned around. Lily was running toward me across the grass, her little legs moving fast, her arms outstretched, a huge, radiant smile on her face.

I dropped to my knees, catching her in my arms and lifting her high into the air, her laughter mixing with the sound of the ocean breeze. The sun dipped below the horizon, leaving behind a sky filled with infinite, brilliant light.
We had survived the plunge. And now, we were finally flying.
