Chapter 9 - The New Ledger

A year passed. Lily took her very first steps on the sandy beach behind our house, her tiny hands clutching my fingers as she giggled, her bright green eyes crinkling with pure joy. She was healthy, vibrant, and completely oblivious to the dark storm that had surrounded her birth.

My career was flourishing. I had become one of the most sought-after forensic accountants in the region, specializing in helping women uncover hidden assets during high-stakes, contentious divorces. I was using my skills to ensure that what happened to me could never happen to anyone else without a severe, immediate consequence.

One evening, while reviewing some old files on my computer, I found the archive from the day of the baby shower—the video recording, the bank statements, the red text on the screen.

For the first time, looking at those files didn't make my heart race or my stomach tighten. The pain was gone, replaced by a deep, immovable sense of peace. The ledger of my life was finally perfectly balanced. The debts had been paid in full, the liabilities removed, and the net worth of my happiness was higher than it had ever been.

I selected the folder, dragged it to the trash bin on my desktop, and clicked Permanently Delete.

I didn't need the evidence anymore. The past was completely erased.

I walked into Lily’s room, where she was sleeping peacefully in her crib, a stuffed plush elephant tucked under her arm. I leaned over the rail, gently kissing her warm cheek, breathing in that sweet, clean baby scent.

"Goodnight, my beautiful girl," I whispered. "Your future is completely paid for."
