Chapter 7 - The Trial of the Vultures

The legal battle stretched over the next six months, but it wasn't the exhausting, draining ordeal Eric and Diane had hoped for. For them, it was a slow, systematic march toward annihilation.

Every single defense their high-priced, court-appointed lawyers tried to construct was instantly vaporized by the mountain of forensic evidence I had prepared. I didn't leave a single stone unturned. I provided the court with IP logs, bank statements, deleted emails recovered from the corporate server, and even the audio recording from my phone during the baby shower, where Eric clearly stated, “You’re giving birth, not buying a yacht,” proving his intent to deprive his dependent wife and child of medical funds.

The media picked up the story—the "Forensic Accounting Mother Who Caught Her Embezzling Husband from Her Hospital Bed." The public outcry was massive. Eric and Diane became pariahs.

During the final sentencing hearing, I sat in the front row of the gallery, holding Lily in my arms. She was six months old now, a beautiful, chubby baby with bright green eyes and a laugh that could light up the darkest room.

Eric stood before the judge, looking broken, thin, and gray in his orange jumpsuit. He turned his head to look at me, his eyes pleading, filled with a desperate, pathetic hope that I would show mercy.

I looked right through him, my face as expressionless as stone.

"Mr. Vance," the judge said, his voice echoing with absolute authority through the courtroom. "Your conduct was not merely fraudulent; it was deeply malicious. You embezzled from your lifelong friends, you defrauded your clients, and you willfully endangered the life of your pregnant wife and unborn child for nothing more than personal avarice. I sentence you to fourteen years in the state penitentiary, with no possibility of parole for the first eight."

Eric slumped forward, his forehead hitting the defense table as he began to sob hysterically.

Then it was Diane’s turn. She tried to play the frail, confused elderly mother who had been misled by her son, but the prosecution produced the text messages I had recovered, where she explicitly told Eric: “Make sure Maya doesn't see the Belize statements. If she finds out, she’ll ruin us.”

"Ms. Vance," the judge said, looking down at her with pure disgust. "You were not a victim. You were the warehouse for this criminal enterprise. I sentence you to six years in prison, and I order the immediate forfeiture of your residence and all personal property to satisfy the restitution debts owed to the victims."

As they were led away through the side door by the bailiffs, their cries echoing down the hallway, I looked down at Lily. She was smiling up at me, chewing happily on a pink plastic teething ring.

"It’s over, baby," I whispered, kissing her forehead. "We're safe."
