Chapter 7 - The Bar Association's Decision

Two weeks later, I was sitting in a sunny courtyard of a private rehabilitation center in Carmel, Indiana. The air was warm with the scent of late spring, and for the first time in my life, I felt safe.

My recovery was slow but steady. The doctors at the new clinic had adjusted my medication, and my liver function tests were showing excellent regeneration. I was going to be okay.

Evelyn walked into the courtyard, holding a thick envelope. She sat down opposite me and slid a document across the stone table.

"It’s started," Evelyn said, her eyes shining with triumph. "The Indiana State Bar Association received our formal complaint against Vanessa, complete with the tox screen and the security footage. They have officially suspended her eligibility to sit for the bar exam pending a full criminal investigation."

I looked at the official letterhead, a sudden wave of relief washing over me. "And Vanessa?"

"She's losing her mind," Evelyn smiled. "She tried to contact me three times yesterday, begging for a settlement. Apparently, the law firm that had offered her a six-figure starting salary found out about the investigation and rescinded their offer. Her career is over before it even began."

"What about my father's business?" I asked.

"Richard’s logistics company is currently undergoing a forensic audit," Evelyn explained. "We filed a civil suit for medical battery and financial coercion. When the bank started looking into his accounts to freeze his assets for the lawsuit, they discovered he had been using company funds to pay for Eleanor's private medical expenses in Chicago. He’s looking at corporate fraud charges in addition to the criminal charges for your drugging."

I leaned back in my chair, looking up at the blue sky. For years, my family had made me feel like I was nothing. They had used me, discarded me, and treated my survival as an afterthought.

Now, their perfect, golden world was crumbling brick by brick. And they had no one to blame but themselves.
