Chapter 9 - The Trial of the Vances

The trial of Richard and Vanessa Vance was the biggest scandal Indianapolis had seen in a decade.
The courtroom was packed with reporters, local politicians, and former friends of my family who had once looked down on me. I sat at the prosecution table beside Evelyn, my heart steady as the evidence was presented to the jury.
The security footage was devastating.
The jury watched in absolute silence as my father, Richard, guided my shaking, semi-conscious hand to sign the consent form while I lay in the ER bed, my head bandaged, my eyes barely open. They heard the testimony of the toxicologist, who confirmed the high levels of diazepam in my system on the night of the accident.
But the final blow came when Carla took the stand.
The night nurse, wearing her blue scrubs, looked directly at the jury and described how my family had checked into a luxury hotel while I was in surgery, and how they had never once returned to check on my recovery over the next five days.
"In my thirty years of nursing," Carla said, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom, "I have never seen such a profound, calculated lack of basic human decency. They treated this young woman like a medical commodity, not a daughter."
The jury deliberated for less than two hours.
Richard Vance was found guilty on all counts: aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit medical battery, and financial fraud. He was sentenced to twelve years in a federal penitentiary.
Vanessa Vance was found guilty of conspiracy and reckless endangerment for drugging my tea. She was sentenced to four years of intensive probation, community service, and a permanent ban from ever practicing law in the state of Indiana.
