Chapter 10 - The True Horizon

One year later, the sun was shining brightly over the campus of the Indiana University School of Nursing.

The air was filled with the sound of laughter, music, and the rustle of black graduation gowns. I stood in the center of the courtyard, my white nurse's pin pinned proudly to my lapel, holding my diploma in my hand.

I had finished my degree at the top of my class, funded entirely by the substantial settlement Evelyn had secured for me from the hospital's malpractice insurance. I didn't owe my family a single penny. I had my own beautiful apartment, a reliable car, and a job offer waiting for me in the pediatric intensive care unit at the city's top hospital.

"Olivia!" a warm, familiar voice called out.

I turned to see Carla walking toward me, holding a massive bouquet of yellow roses. She was wearing her best dress, a bright, proud smile on her face.

"Oh, honey," Carla said, pulling me into a tight, maternal hug. "You did it. I am so, so proud of you."

"I couldn't have done it without you, Carla," I said, my eyes shining with tears of genuine happiness. "You were the only one who stayed."

"And I’m not going anywhere, sweetheart," Carla smiled, wiping a tear from my cheek. "Now, let’s go celebrate. I hear there's a great Italian restaurant down the street, and they definitely don't serve hospital food."

As we walked down the campus steps together, the warm afternoon sun casting long, beautiful shadows across the grass, I took a deep, clear breath. My ribs were healed. My liver had fully regenerated.

My family had tried to use me to save themselves, but in the end, they had only saved me from them.

I had survived the storm. I had won my justice. And in the bright, beautiful light of my new beginning, I had finally, truly, found my home.
