Chapter 5 - The Trap is Signed

Thursday morning arrived with a gray, dismal fog that rolled off the river, matching the bleak mood I was forced to project. Daniel arrived early, his eyes rimmed with red, likely from a long night of scheming with Vanessa and Martin. He looked anxious, his fingers tapping aggressively against his leather briefcase as Marcus escorted him into my study.

I was back in the wheelchair, the gray blanket tucked tight. Clara stood in the corner, holding a tray of ice water, her expression a perfect mask of nervous submission.

"Did Vance look over the papers, Julian?" Daniel asked without preamble, slamming the folder down onto the desk. "We are out of time. The board packets are being printed as we speak."

"He did," I said, my voice quiet, muffled by a fake cough. "He had a few concerns about the liability clauses, but I told him to let it go. You're my best friend, Daniel. If I can't trust you, I can't trust anyone."

Daniel’s eyes flared with a sick, triumphant joy. He quickly turned his face away to conceal it, coughing into his hand. "Exactly, Julian. We’ve been brothers since college. I’ve got your back, always. Just sign right here."

He pulled out the pen and pointed to the yellow sticky note at the bottom of page fourteen.

I reached out, my hand trembling heavily. I managed to sign my name, Julian Sterling, the letters deliberately shaky and uneven. Daniel practically ripped the document out of my hand the moment the ink dried, checking the signature with greedy intensity.

"Perfect," Daniel breathed, his voice trembling with excitement. "This is perfect, Julian. Rest up today. Don't worry about a thing. I’ll handle the board, and Vanessa will handle... well, she’s looking forward to seeing you at the anniversary dinner tonight."

"Tell her I’ll be there," I whispered, leaning my head back against the headrest. "Clara will bring me."

Daniel cast a dismissive glance at Clara. "Right. The maid. Make sure she dresses her up in something presentable, Julian. The Aero Club has a strict dress code, even for medical staff."

With that final insult, he turned and practically sprinted out of the room, eager to register his new power with the corporate secretary.

The moment the door slammed shut, Marcus stepped out from behind the privacy screen, a wide smirk on his face. He held a tablet showing the real-time digital signature tracking.

"The swap was flawless, boss," Marcus said. "The document he took is the one our team prepared. The embedded cryptographic metadata will activate the share transfer the second he logs into the corporate voting portal tomorrow morning. He has no idea he’s carrying a digital grenade in his briefcase."

I stood up from the wheelchair, stretching my legs, a cold fire burning in my veins. "What about the dinner tonight, Marcus? Is the venue secure?"

"My team has occupied the security room at the Aero Club," Marcus reported. "We control the cameras, the audio feeds, and the guest list. Vanessa invited thirty of your biggest competitors and the chief editors of the financial press. She wants a public slaughter."

I turned to Clara, who was watching me with wide, bright eyes. "Marcus, take Clara to the boutique on Fifth Avenue. The one owned by my mother’s old friend, Madame Chen. Tell her to prepare the midnight-blue silk dress I reserved this morning."

Clara’s hands flew to her mouth. "Mr. Julian... a silk dress? I can't wear that! I’m just—"

"You are the woman who stood by me when everyone else ran," I said, stepping closer to her, my voice softening. "Tonight, you aren't a maid, Clara. Tonight, you are the mirror that will show Vanessa exactly how ugly she really is. Go with Marcus. Trust me."

She looked at me for a long moment, the fear evaporating from her eyes, replaced by a deep, unwavering trust. "Okay, Julian," she said, using my name without the title for the very first time. "I trust you."
