Chapter 6 - The Aero Club Slaughter

The Aero Club sat on the top three floors of a shimmering glass skyscraper, offering a panoramic view of the city lights. It was the exclusive playground of the ultra-wealthy, a place where multi-million-dollar deals were made over vintage scotch.

Tonight, the private dining room was packed. Vanessa’s doing.

When Marcus rolled my wheelchair through the double mahogany doors, the room fell into a performative, hushed silence. I sat with my head slightly lowered, the gray blanket a stark, ugly contrast to the tuxedos and diamond necklaces filling the space.

Beside me walked Clara. The midnight-blue silk dress fit her like a second skin, elegant and understated, her hair styled in a classic updo that revealed the graceful curve of her neck. She looked stunning, possessed of a natural, radiant beauty that didn't need the heavy armor of diamonds to command respect.

Vanessa was already waiting at the head of the long table, wearing a scarlet dress that practically shouted her ambition. Daniel stood at her right hand, a smug, untouchable smile plastered across his face.

"Julian," Vanessa said loudly, her voice carrying across the room as she walked toward us. "You made it. And you brought... the help." She cast a venomous, critical look at Clara, her eyes narrowing as she realized just how beautiful the young maid looked in the silk gown. "Where did you get that dress, Clara? Did you steal it from the estate storage?"

"I bought it for her, Vanessa," I said, my voice weak but clear. "She is my medical assistant tonight. My legs... they were hurting terribly during the drive."

Vanessa let out a sharp, mocking laugh, turning to the gathered crowd of investors and journalists. "Hear that, everyone? The great Julian Sterling, reduced to complaining about his legs to a servant. It’s tragic, really."

She stepped closer to my chair, her face hardening into a cruel, unyielding mask. She reached down, unclasped the massive three-carat diamond engagement ring from her finger, and dropped it into my lap. It clinked against the wheels of the chair.

"The engagement is over, Julian," Vanessa announced, her voice echoing off the glass walls. "I am a woman meant for a man who builds empires, not a man who breaks his spine in a sports car. You are a burden. A useless cripple. And frankly, you’re embarrassing to look at."

A collective, quiet gasp went through the room, followed by the immediate, low murmur of reporters preparing their headlines. Daniel stepped forward, wrapping a possessive arm around Vanessa’s waist.

"It’s just business, Julian," Daniel said, his smile dripping with malice. "The company needs strong leadership. Tomorrow morning, I will be taking over as acting CEO. You should take your millions, what’s left of them after your medical bills, and retire to the countryside. Let the real men handle the world."

I looked down at the ring in my lap. I looked at Daniel’s arm around Vanessa. Then, I looked up at Clara. She was looking at me, her eyes steady, giving me the silent signal that Marcus’s team was fully in position.

The time for acting was officially over.

I reached down, picked up the diamond ring from my lap, and tossed it carelessly into a nearby champagne bucket. The crystal splash was loud in the sudden silence.

Then, slowly, deliberately, I threw the gray wool blanket off my legs.

I placed both hands on the armrests of the wheelchair. And I stood up.
