Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

By 6:00 PM, the grand mansion was bathed in the warm, deceptive glow of dusk. From the hidden monitoring room in the basement, where I had returned under the cover of a catering delivery truck, I watched the domestic theater unfold.
Patricia was in high spirits. The call from Victor had clearly given her the ultimate burst of confidence she needed. She had ordered the kitchen staff to prepare a lavish four-course dinner, and she was currently dressed in a stunning, crimson silk gown that flowed around her like spilled blood.
But while she exuded triumph, the rest of the house was living in a state of quiet terror.
On the nursery monitor, Rosa was sitting on the edge of Daniela’s bed. Martina was huddled against her sister's side, her eyes wide and red from crying.
"Is Daddy really coming back soon, Rosa?" Daniela asked, her voice cracking with a vulnerability that tore at my soul. "Miss Patricia said that after the wedding, Daddy won't have time for us anymore. She said we're going away to a place where we have to learn how to be proper children."
Rosa squeezed the little girl’s hands, her own eyes glistening with tears she was desperately trying to suppress for the children's sake. "Your father loves you more than life itself, Daniela. Don't you ever forget that. No matter what Miss Patricia says, Mr. Julian will always come back for you. He is just... he is fighting a battle right now that you cannot see. You must be strong for him. Can you do that for me? Can you protect your little sister?"
Martina nodded bravely, clutching her stuffed rabbit tighter against her chest. "I’ll be brave, Rosa. I won't cry when she yells anymore."
In the basement room, I leaned my forehead against the cool metal of the monitor console, a single, silent tear slipping past my eyes. The guilt was a physical weight, crushing my lungs. I had brought this monster into their sanctuary. I had allowed my own desire for a complete family to blind me to the pure, unadulterated evil standing right in front of me.
"Sir," Leo said quietly, placing a firm, supportive hand on my shoulder. "The caterers have finished setting up the main dining hall. Patricia has dismissed all the standard staff for the evening, including the maids and the gardeners. She only kept Rosa here to serve the dinner. She wanted 'absolute privacy' for when you arrived."
"She wanted no witnesses for whatever she planned to drop into my drink tonight," I corrected, straightening my posture, the sorrow instantly hardening back into armor. "Marcus, is the digital mirror fully functional?"
Marcus nodded from his secondary workstation, tapping his screen. "The moment she logs into her personal laptop to confirm the final offshore transfer tonight, the entire digital trail will be broadcast live to the financial crimes division of the FBI. We have three field agents parked in an unmarked surveillance van just outside your main security gates, waiting for your signal."
"Good," I said, checking my watch. It was 7:15 PM. My scheduled "arrival" time from the airport was 7:30 PM.

I picked up my luxury leather suitcase, the same one I had carried out of the house just thirty-six hours earlier to stage this grand illusion. I looked at my reflection in the dark glass of the monitor. The tired, oblivious billionaire who had left on Tuesday morning was gone. The father who would tear the world apart to protect his children had taken his place.
"Leo, cut the feed to the main entrance cameras for the next five minutes so she doesn't see me coming from the service wing," I ordered. "When the clock strikes seven-thirty, I want the front gates to open automatically. Let the performance begin."
