Chapter 8 - The Cleansing of Sanctuary

"Get your hands off me!" Patricia screamed, her voice hoarse, her expensive hair extensions coming loose and falling over her face as she struggled against the iron grip of the agents. "Julian, you bastard! You set me up! You can't do this to me!"
"Take her away," the lead agent ordered smoothly, entirely unfazed by her high-society tantrums.
As they dragged her out through the grand foyer, her heels scraping uselessly against the marble, I turned around to look at Rosa. The elderly woman was shaking, her hands clutching her apron, her face wet with a mixture of residual fear and profound relief.
I walked over to her, completely abandoning the cold, ruthless demeanor I had used to destroy Patricia. I dropped to my knees in front of my loyal housekeeper—the woman who had been a second mother to me after my own parents passed away.
"Rosa," I said, my voice cracking with emotion as I took her rough, hardworking hands into mine. "Can you ever forgive me? I let her words cloud my mind. I allowed suspicion to enter this house. I am so deeply, deeply sorry."
Rosa looked down at me, her eyes overflowing with pure, unconditional kindness. She squeezed my hands back, her thumbs running over my knuckles. "Oh, Julian... my dear boy. There is nothing to forgive. You are a father. A father’s job is to look for danger everywhere, even when the danger hides behind a beautiful smile. You came back for us. That is all that matters."
"Daddy?"
A small, hesitant voice echoed from the top of the grand staircase.
I snapped my head around. Martina and Daniela were standing on the landing, wearing their matching flannel pajamas, clutching each other's hands. They had heard the shouting, the breaking candelabra, and the heavy footsteps of the federal agents. They looked terrified, unsure of what version of the world they were about to step into.
I stood up, opening my arms wide. "Martina! Daniela!"
They didn't just walk down the stairs; they flew. They sprinted down the marble steps, their little bare feet pattering against the stone, and threw themselves into my arms with such force that we all collapsed onto the plush rug together. They wrapped their little arms around my neck, sobbing hysterically, burying their faces into my shoulders.

"I’m here, I’m here," I whispered over and over again, burying my face in their soft hair, weeping openly for the first time in years. "I’m never leaving again. The bad person is gone. She’s gone forever. Nobody is ever going to make you afraid in your own home again. I promise you. I promise you on my life."
Rosa walked over, kneeling beside us, wrapping her long arms around the three of us, forming a human fortress of pure, genuine love that no amount of criminal ambition could ever penetrate. The air in the mansion, which had felt so cold and suffocating for months, suddenly felt light, warm, and clean again.
