Chapter 5 - The Master’s Return

The heavy oak front doors of the mansion swung open with a familiar, grand groan. I stepped into the cavernous foyer, deliberately letting the heels of my leather shoes click sharply against the marble floor. I set my suitcase down with a heavy, deliberate thud.
"Patricia? Girls? I’m home!" I called out, my voice dripping with an engineered warmth, standard, cheerful, and entirely oblivious.
Within seconds, the rustle of silk echoed from the grand staircase. Patricia came gliding down the steps, her crimson dress shimmering under the crystal chandelier. Her face was illuminated by a radiant, breathtaking smile—a smile that, hours ago, would have filled my heart with joy, but now filled my mouth with the taste of copper and ash.
"Julian, darling!" she cried out, throwing her arms around my neck, inhaling deeply against my collar. She smelled of expensive French perfume and premium bourbon. "You’re early! Oh, thank goodness. The house has been so dreadfully quiet without you."
"The meetings wrapped up ahead of schedule," I said, forcing my arms to wrap around her waist, fighting down the intense physical revulsion that threatened to make me sick. "I couldn't spend another night in a hotel room when my beautiful future wife was waiting for me at home."
She pulled back, her eyes searching my face with a sharp, calculating scrutiny. For a fraction of a second, I wondered if she could see the trap hidden behind my eyes. But her own arrogance was her undoing. She saw only what she wanted to see: a wealthy, compliant man completely under her control.
"Where are the girls?" I asked, looking toward the living room. "And Rosa? I brought back some chocolates from the airport lounge."
"Oh, the girls are upstairs in their rooms, resting," Patricia said smoothly, weaving her arm through mine as she guided me toward the grand dining room. "They had a bit of an exhausting couple of days. You know how dramatic they can get when you're away. And Rosa... well, Rosa has been making things rather difficult, Julian. We really need to have a serious talk about her future in this house tonight."
"Is that so?" I replied, pulling out her chair at the massive candlelit dining table. "Well, let’s have a drink first. Let’s celebrate my return."
"I’ve already poured you a glass of your favorite scotch," she said, gesturing toward a crystal tumbler sitting at my place setting. The amber liquid looked innocent enough, but through the hidden cameras earlier, I had watched her slip two drops of a clear, concentrated sedative from a tiny glass vial into the glass—just enough to make me drowsy, compliant, and ready to sign whatever "urgent foundation updates" she presented to me before bed.
I sat down, picking up the glass, swirling the liquid slowly. "You know, Patricia, looking at you tonight, I realize how incredibly lucky I am. You’ve taken such absolute control of my life since you arrived."
"I only want what's best for you, Julian," she whispered, leaning across the table, her eyes gleaming with the thrill of the final stretch. "For you, and for our future."
"Then let’s make a toast," I said, raising the glass to my lips, stopping just millimeters away from the rim. "To exposing the secrets we keep inside this house."

Patricia’s smile faltered slightly, a shadow of confusion crossing her brow. "What a strange toast, darling."
"Drink up, Patricia," I smiled, setting the glass back down onto the table, completely untouched. "Because the real show is about to start."
