Chapter 5 - The Toxicology Report

At 5:30 AM, I met Miller in a quiet corner of a 24-hour diner near the naval station.

Miller slid a sealed manila envelope across the formica table toward me, alongside a steaming mug of black coffee.

"The toxicology report from the base lab came back thirty minutes ago," Miller said, his expression grim. "That bottle of 'supplements' your sister left at the bedside contains high concentrations of liquid succinylcholine mixed with heavy central nervous system depressants."

My hand tightened around my coffee mug. "Succinylcholine? That’s a paralytic agent used in anesthesia."

"In small, diluted daily doses," Miller explained, "it causes severe muscular weakness, loss of motor coordination, slurred speech, and extreme vertigo. A child taking that compound wouldn't be able to stand up without her knees collapsing under her. Every time she tried to walk, she would fall down."

"And the bone density scans?" I asked.

"Completely fabricated," Miller said, pulling out a set of digital X-rays. "We had the chief of pediatric radiology at Balboa Naval Hospital review Lily’s intake scans from yesterday. Her bones are completely healthy, Sarah. There is zero evidence of osteogenesis imperfecta. The fractures she sustained were caused by high-impact blunt force trauma—consistent with being pushed down a flight of stairs while heavily medicated."

I closed my eyes for three seconds, letting the cold horror wash through me, then burning it away into absolute, laser-focused clarity.

"What about the financial accounts?" I asked, opening my eyes.

"We traced the money trail," Miller reported, tapping a series of printouts. "Mercer-Vance Holdings LLC received a $500,000 cash loan three months ago from an offshore lender linked to a private equity firm in the Cayman Islands. That loan was secured using your home equity and your military pension as collateral. Mark forged your power of attorney while you were deployed."

"So if they didn't get the insurance payout from Lily's disability," I realized, "the offshore lender would foreclose on my home and seize my entire life savings within sixty days."

"Exactly," Miller nodded. "Mark is completely broke. His real estate firm went bankrupt last year, and he’s been living off Diane’s money and your military paychecks. This entire plot was their way out of financial ruin."

I picked up the manila folder, sliding it into my leather bag.

"Who do we have lined up for 8:00 AM?" I asked.

"I’ve coordinated directly with the Special Investigations Division of the San Diego Police Department, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), and the State Medical Board," Miller said, a dark smile finally appearing on his face. "NCIS Special Agent Vance—no relation to your scumbag husband—will be leading the federal arrest team."

"No," I said, standing up from the table. "NCIS and SDPD can handle the outer perimeter. But when the trap closes at 8:00 AM... I am going to be the one holding the door."
