Chapter 7 - The Arrest

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DON'T MOVE! PUT YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEAD!"
A squad of six heavily armed NCIS special agents and San Diego Police detectives flooded the room, their tactical weapons drawn and red laser sights bouncing off the walls.
Special Agent Vance stepped into the center of the room, holding a thick stack of federal arrest warrants.
"Mark Vance, Diane Vance, and Dr. Evelyn Mercer," Agent Vance announced, his voice booming off the linoleum floor. "You are under arrest by order of the United States District Court."
"What?!" Diane screamed, backing up against the wall as an agent grabbed her arms, pulling her hands behind her back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs over her mink coat. "Do you have any idea who I am?! Get your filthy hands off me!"
"You have the right to remain silent," the arresting officer recited coldly, forcing Diane down into a chair. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
Mark dropped his briefcase. The leather container burst open on impact, scattering forged power-of-attorney documents, fake medical records, and the $2.5 million insurance rider across the floor.
"Sarah!" Mark fell to his knees, tears erupting from his eyes as an NCIS agent pinned his arms behind his spine. "Sarah, please! It was Mom! It was all Mom's idea! She forced me into it! I love Lily! I swear I love her!"
"Shut up, you pathetic coward!" Diane shrieked from her chair, glaring at her son with absolute venom. "You signed every single paper! You took the money!"
Evelyn collapsed against the wall, weeping hysterically as female detectives cuffed her wrists. "Sarah... please... I’m your sister... I was in debt... they promised to pay off my clinic's mortgages... please forgive me!"
I stood in the center of the room, unmoving, an island of absolute stillness amidst the chaos.
I walked over to where Mark was pinned to the floor. I knelt down, looking into his terrified, tear-streaked face.
"You thought because I was overseas, my daughter was unprotected," I said softly, my voice carrying the full weight of a mother’s cold, unyielding vengeance. "You forgot that everything I learned in the military was designed to destroy people like you."

I pulled the wedding ring from my left hand, dropping the gold band onto the floor right beside his tear-stained cheek.
"Special Agent Vance," I said, standing up and turning to the lead investigator. "Take them out of my sight."
