Chapter 6 - The Trap Collapses

At 7:45 AM, the ninth floor of San Diego General Hospital was unnaturally quiet.

Lily had been moved to a private corner suite at the end of the pediatric corridor. Inside the room, two plainclothes NCIS agents sat in the corner behind a mobile privacy screen, their sidearms hidden beneath their jackets. Lily was sitting up in bed, happily drawing pictures in a coloring book, flanked by Aunt Karen—my father’s sister, who had arrived on an early flight after I called her the previous night.

I stood by the window, wearing my full Military Service Dress uniform—complete with my medals, rank insignia, and intelligence crests pinned to my chest.

At precisely 8:02 AM, the heavy oak doors at the end of the hallway swung open.

Mark walked in first, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, holding a leather briefcase. Behind him stepped Diane, draped in a mink coat, looking as cold and regal as ever. Evelyn brought up the rear, carrying a stack of medical chart folders and a manila legal envelope.

They walked into the room with the supreme, arrogant confidence of predators who believed their prey was completely trapped.

Mark stopped dead in his tracks when he saw me standing there in full dress uniform.

"Sarah?" Mark blinked, staring at my brass medals and dark blue jacket. "Why are you wearing your service uniform? What's going on?"

"I thought I should dress appropriately for the occasion, Mark," I said, stepping away from the window, my hands resting behind my back.

Diane scoffed, stepping forward and setting her designer handbag on the table. "Don't be dramatic, Sarah. We don't have time for military pageantry today. Evelyn has brought the transfer documentation to move Lily to the North County specialized care center."

"Is that so?" I looked at my sister. "Evelyn, tell me about the transfer documents."

Evelyn shifted uncomfortably on her feet, refusing to make eye contact with me. "It’s... it's for Lily's own good, Sarah. The medical facility in North County has round-the-clock pediatric specialists who can manage her bone condition."

"Her bone condition," I repeated, taking a step toward them. "You mean the osteogenesis imperfecta you diagnosed her with four months ago?"

"Yes," Evelyn stammered, holding the charts tighter against her chest. "The genetic scans confirmed—"

"The genetic scans were forged, Evelyn," I cut her off, my voice dropping like a heavy steel guillotine.

The room went dead silent.

Mark took a step back, his face draining of color. "Sarah... what are you talking about?"

"I’m talking about the succinylcholine you’ve been mixing into my daughter’s morning juice for sixteen weeks," I said, looking directly at my sister. "I’m talking about the paralytic compounds that made her knees collapse so you could push her down the stairs and call it an 'accident.'"

"You’re insane!" Diane yelled, her voice screeching across the room. "You’ve lost your mind! Combat stress has completely destroyed your brain! Mark, call the hospital security immediately! Get this crazy woman out of here!"

Mark pulled out his phone with trembling hands.

May you like

"Go ahead and make the call, Mark," I said calmly. "Because the people coming through that door aren't hospital security."

Before Mark could press a single button, the doors to the private suite were kicked open with a thunderous CRACK!
