Chapter 8 - THE PRICE OF ARROGANCE

Six months later.
The final divorce decree was officially signed in a quiet, dignified court chamber.
Under the terms of the settlement, Daniel Hale surrendered all claims to marital property, alimony, and custody. Furthermore, to avoid additional civil damages for assault and emotional distress, Daniel was forced to hand over his remaining personal holdings, leaving him entirely bankrupt.
Two weeks after the divorce was finalized, Daniel was formally arrested at his foreclosed estate on charges of corporate fraud, tax evasion, and embezzlement. He was sentenced to seven years in federal prison.
Vivian Hale, left without a home, income, or social status, was forced to move into a tiny, dilapidated one-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of the city. To pay for her basic groceries and medical expenses, the woman who once bragged about never working a day in her life was forced to take a job as a night-shift cleaner at a local shopping mall—spending her evenings pushing a mop and bucket across dirty floors.
One evening, while pushing her cleaning cart past a giant electronic billboard in the mall plaza, Vivian paused.
On the massive screen, a live broadcast showed the grand opening of the Montgomery Women & Children’s Rehabilitation Center—a fifty-million-dollar state-of-the-art facility funded entirely by my foundation to support vulnerable, abused mothers recovering from difficult births and domestic violence.
On the screen, I stood under the bright lights, radiant and elegant in a white silk dress, surrounded by top medical leaders, dignitaries, and my loving brother Julian.

In my arms, six-month-old Lily giggled happily, wearing a tiny pink dress, reaching out to touch a bouquet of fresh white roses.
Vivian stood alone in the dark mall, holding her dirty mop, watching the woman she had once pushed into the dirty water shine like a star before the entire world. A single tear of regret rolled down her wrinkled cheek, but no one was there to pity her.
