Chapter 4 - THE LEGAL SIEGE

The New Year's Eve party ended not with a champagne toast, but with a humiliated, frantic exodus of Columbus’s elite. Within thirty minutes of Richard Vance's legal declaration, every single guest had fled the property. The caterers packed up their trays, the jazz quartet packed their instruments, and Peyton’s high-society reputation was shattered beyond repair before the midnight clock even struck.

Standing in the center of the vast, deserted living room, surrounded by half-empty champagne glasses and discarded party favors, Austin stood screaming at Vance and the police officers.

"You can't do this! You can't just kick me out of my own house on New Year's Eve!"

"Actually, we can," Officer Davis replied calmly. "Under the emergency injunction signed by Judge Miller at 6:00 PM today, full physical possession of 1044 Whispering Pines Way is temporarily granted to Mr. Joshua Bailey pending the formal revocation trial. You, your wife, and your child have ninety minutes to pack personal clothing and vacate the premises."

"Ninety minutes?!" Peyton shrieked, her voice cracking into pure hysteria. "Are you insane?! Where are we supposed to go?!"

"I suggest a hotel," Gianna said quietly, stepping forward from behind Joshua. She looked at Peyton not with hatred, but with a cold, impenetrable calm that terrified her daughter-in-law. "There's a very nice mid-tier motel three miles down the road. The rooms are cold, but I'm sure you can manage."

"Mom, please!" Austin cried, dropping his arrogant persona completely as reality crashed down on him. He lunged toward Gianna, falling to his knees—the exact same spot where Gianna had been forced to kneel and scrub the floor just twenty-four hours earlier. "Mom, don't do this to me! I'm your son! I made a mistake, okay? I was stressed! Work was crazy! Peyton was pushing me! Please, don't take the house away!"

Joshua stepped between Austin and Gianna, his tall frame blocking his son completely. "Do not address her. You lost the right to call her 'Mom' the moment you gave her a bucket and told her she was nothing more than the help."

"Dad..."

"Get up, Austin," Joshua commanded, his voice cold as iron. "Gather your clothes. Get your son. And get out of my house."

For the next hour, a surreal nightmare unfolded for Austin and Peyton. Under the watchful eyes of four private security operatives and two police officers, they were forced to pack whatever clothes they could fit into luggage bags. Every item they attempted to carry out—jewelry, art, electronics—was inspected by Marcus Brody to ensure no assets purchased with Gianna’s stolen pension money or tied to the house were removed.

When ten-year-old Jesse walked down the stairs holding his small backpack, he ran straight past his parents and wrapped his arms around Gianna’s waist.

"Grandma! Are you coming with us?" Jesse sobbed.

Gianna knelt down, her eyes softening as she gently stroked her grandson's hair. "No, sweetheart. Grandma is staying here for a little while. But I promise you, no matter what happens between the grown-ups, I will always love you and look out for you."

Jesse looked at his father, then at his mother, who was furiously shoving designer handbags into a suitcase, cursing under her breath. "I don't want to go with them, Grandma," the boy whispered tears streaming down his face. "They're always mean to you... and they yell at me all the time."

Gianna’s heart broke. She looked up at Joshua, who gave her a subtle, knowing nod. They couldn't keep Jesse legally tonight, but they knew that the boy’s well-being would become a central pillar of the legal war ahead.

At 11:30 PM, thirty minutes before the New Year, Austin, Peyton, and Jesse were escorted out to the driveway. Their luxury vehicles were parked outside, but their bank accounts were already undergoing temporary freezing orders initiated by Vance’s firm to prevent the concealment of stolen funds.

As Austin drove out through the iron gates of Whispering Pines, he looked in his rearview mirror. The magnificent estate—the symbol of status he had tortured his mother to maintain—was fully illuminated. Standing on the front porch, arm in arm, were his parents.

At midnight, fireworks exploded across the Columbus sky, celebrating the arrival of the New Year. Inside the mansion, Gianna and Joshua sat on the plush velvet sofa in the living room. For the first time in nine months, Gianna felt the quiet warmth of safety.

Joshua took her bandaged hand in his, kissing her soft palm. "Happy New Year, my love."

Gianna smiled, a tear slipping down her cheek. "Happy New Year, Josh. What happens now?"

"Now," Joshua said, his eyes hardening with determination, "we take back everything else they stole from you."
