Chapter 5 - DISCLOSURES AND DECEIT

The fallout from the New Year's Eve eviction was instantaneous and devastating. By Monday morning, news of the incident at 1044 Whispering Pines Way had circulated through every high-society group and business network in Columbus. Peyton’s interior design firm lost three major high-net-worth clients in a single day as rumors spread that she and her husband had been legally removed from their home for severe elder abuse and financial theft.

Living out of a cramped, two-room extended-stay hotel on the outskirts of the city, Austin’s arrogance quickly mutated into desperate rage. He hired a high-priced corporate defense attorney, Julian Thorne—a ruthless lawyer known for aggressive media tactics and legal loop-holes.

On January 4th, Thorne filed an emergency counter-motion in the Franklin County Common Pleas Court, demanding the immediate reinstatement of Austin’s property rights and claiming that Joshua and Gianna had orchestrated a "hostile, fraudulent takeover" of a legally deeded family asset.

In his motion, Thorne argued that Gianna had resided at the Columbus property voluntarily as a beloved family member who chose to assist with household duties, and that the allegations of financial theft were merely "misunderstood internal family financial transfers."

On January 10th, the two legal teams met for a mandatory pre-trial evidentiary conference in downtown Columbus.

The conference room was cold and quiet. Austin sat next to Julian Thorne, wearing an expensive suit, trying to project air of calm confidence. Across the long oak table sat Joshua, Gianna, and Richard Vance.

"Let's be reasonable here, Mr. Vance," Julian Thorne began, leaning back in his chair and clicking his pen. "My client is a successful professional. The property deed at Whispering Pines bears his name. What your clients are attempting to do is rely on an archaic, legally dubious clause from 2009 to strip a man of his primary residence over what amounts to a domestic misunderstanding. We are prepared to offer your clients a financial settlement of $100,000 if they drop this ridiculous suit and vacate the premises immediately."

Richard Vance didn't even flinch. He slowly opened a thick black binder and slid three documents across the table toward Thorne and Austin.

"A domestic misunderstanding, Mr. Thorne?" Vance said, his voice dropping an octave into a tone of lethal precision. "Let's review the evidence compiled by our private investigation team over the last seven days."

Vance pointed to the first document. "Document A: Bank statements showing that over a nine-month period, $38,500 was withdrawn from Mrs. Gianna Bailey's private pension account. Every single transaction was traced directly to IP addresses originating from Austin Bailey’s home office or Peyton Bailey's business credit terminal."

Austin's face twitched slightly, but he stayed silent.

"Document B," Vance continued, sliding the second paper forward. "Medical reports from Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, dated January 1st. The examining physician documented severe chemical burns, open ulcerations on her hands consistent with prolonged unprotected exposure to industrial bleach, malnutrition, and signs of physical restraint on her wrists."

Julian Thorne glanced down at the medical report, his confident expression wavering for the first time. He shot a quick, sharp look at Austin. "Austin... what is this?"

"She... she had sensitive skin!" Austin stammered, his cheeks flushing bright red. "She insisted on cleaning with bleach! I told her not to!"

"And Document C," Vance interrupted, ignoring Austin entirely. "A audio recording recovered from the kitchen's smart home hub, which was automatically uploaded to the cloud server on December 28th."

Vance pressed play on a small digital recorder on the table.

The room filled with the clear, crisp sound of Austin’s voice:

“You’re not my mother here. You’re the help you owe us for everything we’ve spent on you... If this floor isn't spotless by tomorrow, I’m taking away your meals for the weekend. Do you understand me? Get back on your knees.”

Then came Peyton’s voice, laughing softly in the background: “Make sure she scrubs under the refrigerator too, Austin. The old hag missed it last week.”

The silence that followed the recording was deafening.

Julian Thorne slowly closed his notepad, his face pale. He leaned over to Austin and whispered loudly enough for everyone to hear: "Why the hell didn't you tell me there was audio?"

Austin sat frozen, sweat breaking out on his forehead. He looked across the table at his mother. Gianna didn't look angry; she looked at him with profound sorrow, as if she were looking at a stranger who wore her son’s face.

"Mr. Thorne," Vance said softly, leaning over the table. "Our motion for full, permanent revocation of title, full restitution of stolen funds, and criminal charges for elder abuse goes before Judge Miller on Monday. My advice to your client is very simple: start looking for a permanent apartment. Because he is never setting foot in that house again."
