Chapter 6 - THE TANGLED WEB
Driven into a corner, Peyton decided that if she couldn't win in court, she would win in the court of public opinion. Desperate to save her failing interior design business and rehabilitate her reputation, she reached out to a popular local news outlet, spinning a fabricated story about "greedy, estranged in-laws attempting to steal a family home from a young working couple."
On January 15th, a local news segment aired a brief interview with Peyton, who wept bitterly on camera, claiming that Gianna had come to live with them as a guest, became mentally unstable, and was now manipulating Joshua into destroying their family.
"We gave her a roof over her head, loved her, and took care of her," Peyton lied to the reporter, dabbing her eyes with a tissue. "And now they are using legal technicalities to put us and our ten-year-old child on the street."
The smear campaign caused an immediate stir in Columbus. Online forums and local social media pages burst into debate. Some people bought into Peyton's sob story, condemning the older couple, while others waited for official court statements.
When Joshua saw the news broadcast in the living room of the Whispering Pines home, his blood boiled. He wanted to go to the media immediately and expose them, but Vance held him back.
"Let them dig their own grave, Joshua," Vance advised calmly over the phone. "Publicity is a double-edged sword. When you lie on camera, every word is recorded. And in a court of law, perjury and public defamation carry heavy penalties."
While Peyton was busy fighting a media war, Marcus Brody was digging deeper into Austin and Peyton’s actual financial reality—and what he found was far worse than anyone had anticipated.
On January 20th, Brody met Joshua and Gianna at Vance's legal office with a massive legal folder.
"Austin isn't just an abusive son," Brody revealed, laying out financial charts on the conference table. "He’s a financial fraudster on the verge of total collapse."
Brody explained that when Austin claimed he had "lost his job" in early 2023, he hadn't been laid off. He had been quietly terminated from his position as a senior financial analyst at a regional investment firm for embezzling $150,000 from client accounts. To avoid a public scandal, the firm had allowed him to resign quietly after he promised to repay the money.
To fund his lavish lifestyle, pay off his debts, and keep Peyton’s failing interior design firm afloat, Austin had taken out multiple illegal second mortgages on the Whispering Pines property by forging Joshua’s signature on secondary legal affidavits.
"He forged my name?" Joshua asked, his jaw clenching tightly.
"Three times," Brody confirmed. "He took out a $400,000 private equity loan against the house six months ago. That’s why he brought your wife to Columbus, Joshua. He didn't just want a maid. He needed her pension card to cover the monthly interest payments on the fraudulent loan so the bank wouldn't foreclose on the property!"
Gianna buried her face in her hands, weeping softly. "He didn't love me at all. He brought me there... just to exploit me to cover his crimes."
"It gets worse," Brody added. "Peyton was fully aware of the forgery. In fact, her signature appears as a witness on two of the fraudulent mortgage documents."
Joshua stood up from his chair, his hands shaking with intense, righteous fury. "They didn't just hurt my wife. They tried to ruin our family’s legacy, steal our home, and drag our grandson into a criminal mess."
Vance smiled thinly, sliding a new legal document across the table. "This changes everything, Joshua. We are no longer just fighting a civil property dispute. We are filing a comprehensive federal civil RICO and fraud complaint, alongside criminal referrals to the Franklin County District Attorney's office for forgery, grand theft, and elder abuse."

"What happens to the house now?" Gianna asked quietly.
"The fraudulent loans will be voided under the forgery provisions of Ohio property law," Vance assured her. "The title will be permanently restored to you and Joshua, clear of all encumbrances. And as for Austin and Peyton... they aren't just going to lose this house. They are facing severe criminal prosecution."
