Chapter 3 - Shaking the Foundations

The grand dining room of the Vance estate in Chestnut Hill was silent except for the rhythmic clicking of silver against porcelain. My mother, Eleanor Vance, sat at the head of the table, perfectly coiffed, her diamond necklace catching the light of the crystal chandelier. To her right sat Noelle, her expression a mix of smug anticipation and tightly wound anger.

I had stormed into the house unannounced, refusing to sit down or accept the wine the butler offered. I stood at the foot of the table, staring down the woman who had given me life and then systematically dismantled it.

"Evan, darling, do sit down," Eleanor said, her voice smooth and devoid of any guilt. "Noelle has told me about your little... episode in the park. Honestly, a public scene over an old flame? You are days away from a high-profile wedding. The press would have a field day."

"She has my eyes, Mother," I said, my voice dangerously calm.

Eleanor didn't blink. She took a delicate sip of her wine. "Many people have gray eyes, Evan. Don't be melodramatic."

I pulled the faded envelope from my breast pocket and slammed it onto the table, right next to her plate. The silver rattled. Noelle flinched, but Eleanor merely looked down at it, her expression hardening.

"You intercepted her letters. You forged a letter from her telling me she cheated, and you forged a letter from me telling her to get an abortion," I said, the rage inside me vibrating through every word. "You blackmailed her father with a fraudulent lawsuit. You stole four years of my children's lives, Eleanor."

Noelle looked uncomfortable, glancing between my mother and me. "Eleanor... you told me that girl left him for money," Noelle whispered, a sudden seed of doubt planting itself in her mind.

"Silence, Noelle," Eleanor snapped, her aristocratic facade slipping to reveal the cold dictator underneath. She turned her icy gaze up to me. "I did what was necessary to protect this family, Evan. That girl was a nobody. The daughter of a failing general practitioner. She had no pedigree, no connections, and no place in the Vance legacy. Noelle’s family aligns perfectly with our business interests. I secured your future."

"You ruined my life!" I roared. "You think Vance Enterprises is a future? It’s a cage built on lies and cruelty. I don't care about the legacy. I don't care about the inheritance."

Eleanor laughed coldly. "Oh, please. You enjoy the penthouse, the cars, the status. You won't throw that away for a girl who smells like cheap laundry detergent and three bastards."

The word had barely left her mouth when I made my decision. I reached into my pocket, pulled out my corporate ID badge and the keys to the company car, and threw them onto the table.

"I resign from Vance Enterprises, effective immediately," I said, looking her dead in the eye. "And as for the wedding..." I turned to Noelle, whose face went completely pale. "I'm sorry, Noelle. You didn't deserve to be a pawn in this, but I cannot marry you. Our relationship was built on a foundation my mother manufactured. I am calling off the wedding."

"Evan, you can't do this!" Noelle shrieked, standing up so fast her chair tipped over. "The invitations are out! The Bellevue is booked! My family’s reputation!"

"File a lawsuit for breach of promise if you want," I said, already turning toward the door. "But I am done living a lie."

May you like

"If you walk out that door, Evan, you are disinherited!" Eleanor shouted behind me, her voice finally losing its composure, cracking with furious panic. "You will have nothing! Not a single cent!"

I paused at the threshold, looking back over my shoulder with a sense of freedom I hadn't felt in four long years. "I've had nothing for the last four years, Mother. I'm finally going to go find everything."
