Chapter 8 - The Legal Showdown

The deposition room at the Philadelphia Family Court was stark, brightly lit by fluorescent bulbs that offered no warmth. Eleanor Vance sat at the end of the long conference table, flanked by four senior partners from the city’s most expensive law firm. She looked as imperious as ever, her posture rigid, her chin tilted up in defiance.
Rachel and I sat opposite her, with Marcus and a sharp, young family lawyer named Sarah who had taken our case pro bono after seeing the evidence of corporate overreach.
"Let’s be brief," Eleanor’s lead attorney said, tossing a folder onto the table. "Our client is prepared to establish a ten-million-dollar trust for each child, provide enrollment at the Baldwin School and Episcopal Academy, and fully fund their future healthcare. In exchange, we demand joint custody, with the children residing at the Vance estate three weeks out of every month. If you refuse, we will proceed to a full trial, and we will expose Ms. Ames’s financial instability to the court."
Sarah, our lawyer, smiled calmly. She didn't even open the folder. Instead, she leaned forward. "We decline your offer. Completely."
Eleanor let out a cold, dismissive scoff. "Evan, don't be a fool. You are living on a consultant’s salary. You cannot provide for these children the way I can. Look at that woman—she works in a daycare! They have no future with her."
I stood up, resting my hands on the table, staring directly into my mother's cold eyes. "They have a future built on love, honesty, and integrity, Mother. Something you know nothing about. And as for your wealth... I don't think you're going to have much of it left to offer."
Sarah pulled the flash drive Noelle had given us, along with copies of Dr. Ames's journal, and slid them across the table. "These documents have already been authenticated and submitted to the federal prosecutors handling the SEC audit of Vance Enterprises. They contain definitive proof of corporate extortion, fraudulent lawsuits, and illegal interception of mail."
Eleanor’s lead attorney picked up the papers, his brow furrowing as he read through the printed emails. Within seconds, the color began to drain from his face. He leaned over, urgently whispering into Eleanor's ear.
Eleanor tried to maintain her composure, but a visible tremor passed through her jaw. "This is stolen property. It’s inadmissible."
"It was voluntarily provided by a co-resident of the penthouse who had full access to the premises," Sarah countered smoothly. "And more importantly, the federal authorities have already issued a freeze on all assets tied to Aegis Holdings and Vance Enterprises, effective at 9:00 AM this morning. Your trust funds are worthless, Mrs. Vance. Your company is being liquidated."
The heavy mahogany doors of the deposition room suddenly opened. Two plainclothes federal agents stepped inside, badges extended.
"Eleanor Vance?" the lead agent asked, his voice echoing in the quiet room. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, blackmail, and conspiracy to commit extortion. Please step away from the table."
Eleanor sat frozen for a fraction of a second, the reality of her complete downfall finally breaking through her shield of arrogance. She looked at me, her eyes filled with a desperate, bitter fury as the agents stepped forward and clicked the handcuffs around her manicured wrists.

"You ruined this family, Evan," she hissed as they led her toward the door.
"No, Mother," I said softly, watching her go without a single ounce of regret. "You ruined a corporation. I just saved my family."
