Chapter 7 - The Ambush at Blackwood Bridge

At 8:00 AM the next morning, a convoy of four heavily armored black sedans left the Graves estate, heading downtown toward the financial district for the emergency shareholder assembly.

I sat in the middle vehicle between Nathaniel and Victoria. I wore a neat navy-blue dress, polished black shoes, and my hair was tied back with a silk ribbon. On my lap sat a leather document case containing the newly executed Grandchild Succession Trust, bearing my small, neat signature alongside Nathaniel’s legal seal.

My mother remained safe at the estate under the protection of twenty federal marshals who had been brought in overnight.

"Ten minutes to Graves Tower, sir," Marcus reported from the front passenger seat.

The convoy turned onto the elevated bypass that crossed the Blackwood River—the same river system where my mother had been forced off the road twelve years ago.

Suddenly, a deafening explosion rocked the lead security vehicle!

BOOM!

A massive construction crane parked along the side of the bridge swung its heavy iron wrecking ball, slamming directly into the front car of our escort. The lead vehicle crumpled like a soda can, skidding sideways across the lanes and blocking the bridge completely.

"AMBUSH! REVERSE! REVERSE!" Marcus screamed into his radio.

Before our driver could shift into reverse, a heavy concrete-mixing truck rammed into the rear security car, trapping our sedan in the middle of the bridge!

Heavy gunfire erupted from three black vans parked along the pedestrian walkway. Bullets rained down on our armored sedan like hail, cracking the outer layer of the bulletproof glass!

"GET DOWN!" Nathaniel yelled, throwing his body over mine to shield me from the shattered light.

"They're not trying to kill us!" Marcus shouted, pulling out his sidearm. "They're trying to delay us! The shareholder meeting starts in twenty minutes! If we aren't in that room by 9:00 AM, Arthur wins by default!"

Outside, four masked men in tactical gear ran toward our car holding heavy steel crowbars and thermal torches. They began blasting the hinges of our passenger doors with concentrated heat, trying to cut us out!

"Marcus, give me the secondary radio," Nathaniel ordered, his face pale but completely calm.

"Sir?"

Nathaniel grabbed the secure tactical frequency radio. "Code Red on Blackwood Bridge. This is Nathaniel Graves. Execute Air Transport Protocol Alpha immediately."

Less than sixty seconds later, the roar of heavy twin rotors echoed over the river.

A massive, sleek civilian Sikorsky helicopter descended through the morning fog directly above the bridge! Down from the cabin dropped two tactical rescue cables, operated by Nathaniel’s private air security team.

The helicopter's side door opened, and a sniper fired three precision non-lethal tear-gas canisters onto the bridge, instantly blinding the attackers in a thick cloud of white smoke.

Two air-rescue officers rappelled down the cables, landing on the roof of our armored car. They used heavy hydraulic jaws to pop open the reinforced sunroof!

"MR. GRAVES! WE HAVE TO GO NOW!" the lead officer shouted down through the opening, dropping a harness.

Nathaniel picked me up, strapping the small tactical safety harness around my chest and clipping it securely to his own heavy belt.

"Hold on to me, Ruby!" he shouted over the deafening roar of the helicopter blades. "Don't let go!"

I wrapped my arms tightly around his neck, burying my face in his shoulder as the cables retracted with blinding speed, pulling us up out of the smoke, out of the ambush, and soaring high into the sky above the trapped attackers!

Looking down through the clouds, I saw the city stretching out below us.

The clock on my small wrist watch read 8:49 AM.

We had eleven minutes to save our life's work.
