Chapter 3 - The Lockdown

The deafening siren continued to pulse through the room, its sharp rhythm matching the frantic beat of my heart. The red security lights cast long, dramatic shadows across the walls.
Richard rushed to the heavy wooden door and yanked on the handle. It didn't budge. The automated lockdown system had instantly sealed the entire maternity wing.
“Mason, hit the door!” Richard yelled, panic finally shattering his arrogant composure. “Get this damn door open!”
Mason shoved his shoulders against the frame, but the heavy industrial lock held firm.
In the center of the room, Claire was clutching my crying son against her chest, her eyes darting around frantically like a trapped animal. “Richard! What do we do? The lights... they’re locking everything down!”
“Give me the baby!” I rasped from the bed, forcing my body to sit up despite the searing pain in my stomach. “Give me my son, Claire!”
“Shut up, Sarah!” Claire shrieked, backing away into the corner near the window. “He’s ours now! You have two others! You don't deserve three!”
My mother, Linda, was wringing her hands, tears streaming down her face. “Richard... maybe we should put the baby back... this is going too far...”
“Be quiet, Linda!” Richard barked, spinning around to face her. “If we leave without the child now, we leave empty-handed! Mason needs a family!”
Before Richard could approach my bed again, heavy footsteps echoed outside in the corridor. Keycards swiped rapidly across the electronic lock, and the door was thrown open with violent force.
Four armed hospital security officers rushed into the room, led by two uniformed officers from the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department. Behind them stood the charge nurse, her face pale with shock as she saw the blood on my face and sheets.
“DON'T MOVE! HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM!” the lead police officer shouted, unholstering his taser.
Richard immediately raised his hands, shifting his posture in a split second. The menacing tyrant instantly transformed into a bewildered, soft-spoken older gentleman.
“Officers, thank God you’re here!” Richard exclaimed, putting on a trembling, fearful tone. “My daughter just gave birth, but she’s having a severe postpartum psychotic episode! She ripped out her IV, attacked her sister-in-law, and triggered the alarm!”
I stared at my father in absolute disbelief. Even now, facing armed law enforcement, his first instinct was to fabricate a lie so monstrous it made my skin crawl.
Claire picked up on the cue immediately, squeezing out tears. “She tried to throw the baby! We were just trying to keep the newborn safe!”
The lead officer looked from Richard to Claire, then turned his eyes toward me.
I was sitting on the edge of the bed, blood dripping from my ear where Richard’s fist had struck me, my surgical gown stained crimson at the waist. I was trembling, but my eyes were perfectly clear.
“Officer,” I said, my voice steady despite the agony racking my frame. “Look at the ceiling corner behind you.”
The officer glanced up. Tucked neatly into the corner of the recovery room was a high-resolution, wide-angle security camera with a glowing green recording light.
“This is an emergency recovery room,” I continued, pointing a shaking finger at Richard. “That camera recorded every single second. It recorded my father demanding I give my baby to my brother. It recorded him picking up my newborn without my consent. And it recorded him punching me in the side of the head when I tried to stop him.”
Richard’s face drained of all color. He looked up at the black dome of the security camera, his mouth falling open.
The lead officer didn't hesitate. He looked at the charge nurse. “Is that camera active?”
“Yes, Officer,” the nurse replied sternly, her eyes filled with disgust as she looked at Richard. “It records directly to the hospital’s secure server.”
The officer turned back to his partner. “Handcuff the man. Secure the woman holding the infant.”
“Wait! You can’t arrest me! I am her father!” Richard shouted as the officers grabbed his arms and forced them behind his back. The steel handcuffs clicked shut with absolute finality. “This is a family matter! Mason, tell them! Tell them she agreed to this!”
Mason stood frozen in the corner, completely paralyzed by fear, refusing to meet his father’s eyes.
An officer gently took my crying son from Claire’s trembling arms and handed him directly to the charge nurse, who immediately placed him safely in my lap. The moment tiny Leo was against my chest, his wailing stopped, replaced by soft, shaky gasps.
Claire began to scream as another officer escorted her toward the door. “You ruined everything, Sarah! You selfish bitch! You ruined Mason’s life!”

My mother buried her face in her hands, weeping hysterically as Richard was dragged out into the hallway, cursing my name at the top of his lungs.
I held my son tightly against my chest, my tears falling onto his soft blanket. The nightmare in the room was over, but as the nurses rushed to tend to my bleeding wounds, I knew the battle for my family had only just begun.
