Chapter 6 - The Bail Hearing

The Davidson County Criminal Courthouse was packed on Friday morning.

Word of the incident had leaked to the local Nashville press over the weekend. Headlines across local news outlets read: "Prominent Businessman Arrested for Assaulting Daughter and Attempting Newborn Abduction in Hospital Lockdown."

I sat in the front row of the courtroom beside Daniel and our attorney, Arthur Vance. I wore a high-collared dark suit that covered my medical bandages, my hair styled to partially hide the fading yellow-purple bruise along my jaw. My three babies were safe at home under the care of Daniel’s sister and two hired night nurses.

Across the room at the defense table sat my father, Richard.

He was dressed in an orange jail jumpsuit, his wrists restrained by handcuffs linked to a belly chain. He looked older, his hair unkempt, but his eyes still flickered with that arrogant, burning rage whenever he glided a look toward me. Beside him sat Mason, who had been formally charged as an accomplice to attempted kidnapping, and their high-priced defense attorney, Julian Hayes.

Judge Evelyn Montgomery, a stern woman in her late sixties with piercing blue eyes, took her seat on the bench.

“We are here for the bail hearing in the matter of the State of Tennessee versus Richard Sterling and Mason Sterling,” Judge Montgomery announced, reviewing the thick case file before her. “Defense, you may present your arguments for pre-trial release.”

Julian Hayes stood up smoothly, adjusting his suit jacket. “Your Honor, my clients are respected members of this community with zero prior criminal records. What occurred at Vanderbilt Medical Center was a deeply tragic, highly emotional family dispute arising from severe stress and miscommunication during a complex delivery. My client, Richard Sterling, is sixty-four years old and suffers from hypertension. We request immediate release on personal recognizance.”

The prosecutor, Assistant District Attorney Marcus Cole, stood up immediately. “Your Honor, the State strongly opposes bail. This was not a 'miscommunication.' This was a calculated, violent assault and an attempted abduction of a three-hour-old infant from a surgical recovery ward.”

ADA Cole turned to the court clerk. “We submit into evidence State’s Exhibit A: the complete, unedited security footage from Vanderbilt Medical Center Recovery Room 4B.”

The courtroom lights dimmed. A large flat-screen monitor mounted on the wall flickered to life.

The video was crystal clear. The entire courtroom watched in stunned, breathless silence as Richard, Mason, and Claire entered my room. The audio picked up every word clearly: Richard demanding I give my baby to Mason, Claire screaming that I didn't deserve three children, and Richard picking up tiny, swaddled Leo.

Gasps echoed through the public gallery as the video reached its climax.

On the screen, my weak, post-surgery form tried to reach for my son. Richard spun around and delivered a brutal, full-force right hook straight to my head, throwing me back onto the mattress.

Beside me, I felt Daniel’s body stiffen into iron. He squeezed my hand so tightly my knuckles turned white, his eyes fixed on the screen with burning fury.

The video showed me pressing the panic button, the red lights flashing, and Richard desperately trying to escape before officers flooded the room.

The video paused on a frozen frame of my father’s face as he was handcuffed.

The silence in the courtroom was suffocating.

Judge Montgomery slowly lowered her glasses, staring down from the bench at Richard with an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust.

“Mr. Hayes,” Judge Montgomery said, her voice dropping into a terrifyingly quiet register. “You have the audacity to call a brutal, cowardly punch delivered to a recovering mother a 'family dispute'?”

“Your Honor...” Hayes stammered, his polished composure completely evaporating. “My client was... emotionally overwhelmed—”

“Your client acted like a violent predator inside a sacred medical facility,” Judge Montgomery cut him off, slamming her gavel onto the wooden block.

“Bail for Richard Sterling is DENIED. He will remain in custody at the Davidson County Detention Center until trial.”

Richard gasped, turning wild eyes toward his attorney. “What?! You can’t keep me in here!”

“Silence in my courtroom!” Judge Montgomery barked. She then turned her attention to Mason. “As for Mason Sterling, bail is set at five hundred thousand dollars, with mandatory electronic ankle monitoring and an immediate, absolute order of protection prohibiting him from coming within one thousand yards of Sarah Vance or her children.”

As the bailiffs stepped forward to escort Richard back toward the holding cells, my father lost control completely. He thrusted against his chains, pointing his finger at me, screaming at the top of his lungs:

“You ungrateful little bitch! I raised you! Everything you have is because of me! You ruin your own family for a bunch of brats? You’ll burn in hell for this, Sarah!”

I didn't flinch. I sat upright, looking him directly in the eye, my hand resting securely in my husband’s grip.

“Take him out,” Judge Montgomery ordered sternly.

The heavy steel doors closed behind Richard, cutting off his frantic screams. I closed my eyes and let out a long, cleansing breath. The tyrant had lost his crown.
