Chapter 10 - The Walk Home

That evening, as the sun began to set over the rolling hills of Pennsylvania, I took a ride on my motorcycle down Route 17.

The air was soft and warm. The highway that had once been a place of misery for a lonely, beaten boy was now bathed in the golden hues of twilight.

I pulled over at the exact shoulder where I had spotted Mason six months earlier. My security SUVs pulled over behind me, maintaining their respectful distance.

I stepped off the bike, taking off my helmet, and looked out over the fields.

For twenty-five years, people had called me "The Saint" out of fear—a ironic title given to a man who ruled an underground kingdom with an iron fist. But as I looked up at the quiet evening sky, I realized that true power wasn't found in making men tremble in mahogany boardrooms.

It was found in standing between a helpless child and the storm.

My phone chimed in my pocket. It was a text message from Sarah, accompanied by a picture of Mason laughing at the dinner table with a full plate of food, surrounded by new friends from the center.

“He’s home safe, Gabriel. Thank you.”

I smiled, typing a quick reply: “He’ll always be safe.”

I pocketed the phone, put my helmet back on, and started the engine. The roar of the motorcycle echoed across the countryside as I pulled back onto the highway, riding toward the bright lights of the city—a king who had finally found his purpose, and a protector whose legacy was now sealed in grace.
