Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Horizon

While Sarah and Mason's lives began to change for the better, the snake I had bruised in my organization was not entirely dead.

Salvatore Carbone, stripped of his lucrative territory and embarrassed before the entire syndicate, could not stomach his humiliation. Instead of accepting his punishment, he made a fatal error: he reached out to an outsider.

In a secluded warehouse along the Delaware River, Salvatore met with Viktor Petrov—a leader of a ruthless Russian trafficking ring trying to gain a foothold in Pennsylvania.

"Gabriel Romano has grown soft," Salvatore spat, nursing a glass of cheap whiskey in the dimly lit warehouse. "He's wasting time playing guardian angel to street kids and single mothers while his empire sits on millions. Help me remove him, Viktor, and the docks are yours."

Viktor, a towering man with a scarred neck and cold gray eyes, smirked. "Romano is dangerous, Carbone. 'The Saint' doesn't die easily."

"He has a weakness now," Salvatore sneered, leaning in close. "I've been watching him. He checks on that Vance boy every week. He visits the mother's new office. If we take the kid, Romano will walk straight into a trap to get him back."

Viktor considered the proposal, a slow, predatory grin spreading across his face. "A trap for 'The Saint'? I like it. Bring me the boy, and we kill the King."

Unbeknownst to Salvatore, every word of that conversation was being recorded.

Inside a high-tech surveillance van parked two blocks away, Vincent took off his headphones and picked up his radio.

"Boss," Vincent said into the mic. "Salvatore just took the bait."

On the other end of the line, my voice was as smooth as silk. "Good. Let him think his plan is working. It's time to clean house once and for all."
