Chapter 5 - The Gala of Traitors

The Ashford Estate was a sprawling, gated fortress overlooking the cliffs of Big Sur. On the night of the merger gala, hundreds of luxury sedans lined the winding driveway, guarded by dozens of armed guards in crisp tuxedos.
Inside the grand ballroom, chandeliers cast a warm glow over silk gowns, expensive champagne, and high-stakes pacts.
Marcus Kane stood at the top of the grand marble staircase, glass of vintage scotch in hand, soaking in the adulation of the underworld elites. Beside him, Julian Reyes looked smug, nursing a cigar.
"To the new era," Julian toasted, clinking his glass against Marcus’s. "Without Damian Voss dragging us down with his old-school morality, we will control every harbor on the West Coast."
"To the new era," Marcus agreed, smiling broadly.
Suddenly, the massive crystal chandelier above the center of the room flickered twice, then cut out completely.
The ballroom descended into pitch darkness. Gasps and curses echoed through the hall as security guards immediately reached for their sidearms, flicking on weapon lights.
"Don't panic!" Marcus shouted from the balcony. "It's just a local power grid drop! Get the emergency generators online!"
BZZZZT.
The large projection screen behind the main stage—intended to display the new corporate logo of the merged syndicate—flashed to life. But it didn't show logos.
It showed live bank feeds.
Row after row of digital figures began rapidly counting down to zero.
"What is that?" Julian screamed, pushing his way through the guards toward the stage. "That’s my Zurich account! Why is it draining?!"
A synthesized voice boomed through the ballroom speakers, echoing with terrifying clarity:
"Marcus Kane. Julian Reyes. You built your foundation on poison and treason. Now, watch your empire evaporate in real time."
A panic erupted. Mob bosses pulled out their phones, shouting into their receivers as they realized their private accounts, wire transfers, and shell corporations were being emptied systematically into public charity foundations and offshore dead-drops.
Marcus grabbed his radio, his face twisted with rage and terror. "Security! Shut down the server room! NOW!"

From the dark corner of the upper balcony, a low, deep voice replied through his personal earpiece:
"It's too late for that, Marcus."
