Chapter 7 - War in San Francisco

Marcus pulled a flash-bang grenade from his belt, yanked the pin, and slammed it against the floor before diving through the glass balcony window.

BANG!

Blinding light and thunderous sound exploded through the room. I covered my eyes, rolling behind a marble pillar as shrapnel and glass flew through the air.

By the time the smoke cleared, Marcus was gone, having slid down the drainage pipe into the foggy gardens below.

"Boss!" Viktor called out, running up the stairs with a tactical rifle. "Julian Reyes is neutralized. Feds are already swarming the lower gates based on Gabriel’s anonymous tip. We have to go!"

"Where is Marcus heading?" I demanded, wiping a smear of soot from my brow.

Gabriel’s voice cracked through my earbud. "Boss! We have a breach! Marcus’s secondary cell team just tracked Evelyn Vance's phone! They're moving toward the safehouse right now!"

My blood ran cold.

The money didn't matter. The empire didn't matter. The glory didn't matter.

All I could see in my mind was two seven-year-old girls kneeling over me in a rain-soaked alley, pressing an auto-injector into my leg to save a monster who didn't deserve it.

"Cassian! Viktor! With me!" I roared, sprinting down the grand staircase, stepping over the fallen guards. "If Marcus so much as steps onto that porch, I want him torn to pieces!"
