Chapter 8 - The Siege of Haven

The storm had returned with full fury over the city. Heavy rain battered the small wooden house in the Safe District where Evelyn, Nora, and Maya were hiding.
Inside, the lights flickered and died.
Evelyn immediately pulled her daughters into the reinforced pantry, locking the heavy oak door and holding a small revolvers she had taken from her late husband's desk years ago.
"Mommy..." Maya whispered, clutching her sister's hand in the dark. "Is it the bad men?"
"Stay quiet, baby," Evelyn whispered back, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Just stay behind me."
CRASH!
The front door was kicked off its hinges. Heavy footsteps echoed across the hardwood floor of the living room.
"Evelyn!" Marcus’s voice rasped through the dark house, unhinged and wild. "I know you're in here! I know you saved him! Show yourself, you miserable little rat!"
Marcus kicked open closet doors, smashing furniture, enraged beyond reason. He had lost his accounts, his reputation, and his syndicate. The only card he had left to play was taking hostage the family that had saved Damian Voss.
"Come out, Evelyn! Or I swear I will burn this house to the ground with you inside it!" Marcus screamed, pouring gasoline from a red canister over the curtains.
He pulled a gold lighter from his pocket and flicked the flame.

Before the spark could hit the gasoline, the wooden wall behind Marcus exploded in a shower of splinters.
A giant hand reached through the broken wall, grabbed Marcus by the throat, and yanked him straight through the plasterboard into the hallway.
