Chapter 6 - Two Sons under One Roof

Dawn broke over the pine forest in a brilliant haze of gold and pink.
The rain had finally stopped, leaving the crisp mountain air smelling of pine needles and damp earth. Inside the grand kitchen of Blackwood Ridge, a warm fire crackled in the stone hearth.
Caleb had arrived two hours earlier. After a long sleep, he had come downstairs in his pajamas, surprised to find himself in the mountain lodge.
When he walked into the kitchen, he stopped dead in his tracks.
Sitting at the large oak island, drinking a cup of warm milk, was Leo. Beside him stood Rachel, who was helping the lodge’s chef prepare a batch of fresh pancakes.
"Leo?" Caleb blinked, rubbing his eyes in disbelief. "What are you doing at my dad's mountain house?"
Leo set his milk down, looking nervously at his mother before answering. "Your dad brought us here. Because of the storm."
Caleb’s face instantly broke into a massive, delighted smile. "That’s awesome! Dad! Look! Leo's here!"
I stepped into the kitchen, wearing a dark sweater and trousers, holding two cups of coffee. I set one cup down in front of Rachel, offering her a quiet nod, before walking over to stand between the two boys.
"Caleb," I said gently, crouching down so I was at eye level with both of them. "There's something very important I need to tell you both."
The kitchen grew quiet. Rachel stopped flipping pancakes, her breath catching in her throat as she stepped closer to the island, watching us intently.
I looked at Caleb, then turned my head to look at Leo.
"Ten years ago, before you were born, Caleb," I began softly, "I loved a very special woman. But bad people told us lies and separated us. We thought we had lost each other forever."
Caleb tilted his head, his sharp young mind working quickly. "Like in the storybooks?"
"Yes, exactly like that," I smiled gently. "And because of those lies, I didn't know that Leo was born."
Leo’s small hands tightened around his glass of milk. He looked up at me, his golden-brown eyes wide, searching my face with an agonizing blend of hope and fear.
"Leo," I said, reaching out to rest my hand softly over his small fingers. "I am your father."
A heavy, beautiful silence filled the kitchen.
Leo stared at me, his lip quivering slightly. "You're... my dad?"
"I am," I whispered, tears filling my eyes for the first time in twenty years. "I didn't know about you, Leo. If I had known, I would have fought through an army to be with you. I am so sorry I wasn't there to buy your shoes. I am so sorry I wasn't there to hold you when you were cold."
Leo looked at his mother. Rachel was weeping silently, nodding her head softly toward him.
Then, Leo turned back to me. He didn't say a word. He simply slid off the stool and threw his small arms around my neck, burying his face into my shoulder.
I pulled him tight against my chest, holding my eldest son for the very first time, feeling his small heart beating against mine.
Caleb watched them for a moment, then looked at me with bright, excited eyes. "Wait... so Leo is my brother?!"
May you like
"He is your big brother, Caleb," I laughed through my tears, reaching out with my other arm to pull Caleb into the hug as well.
The two boys hugged each other, laughing, while Rachel stood by the counter, covering her mouth with her hands, weeping with a joy that had been ten years in the making.
